Big news for Shrek fans – the ogre is returning to the big screen.

It’s been over 20 years since everyone’s favorite ogre made his cinematic debut, but his reputation is as strong as ever. The combined efforts of its four films and two spinoffs have raked in over $4 billion for DreamWorks as of 2024 – and if audiences had it their way, we’d have Shrek 5 in theaters to top up that total any day now.

While we may not have an official word on Shrek 5 just yet (despite countless rumors and fan-made posters circulating Facebook), there is some good news for Shrek’s most dedicated brogres. Shrek 2 (2004) is reportedly getting a rerelease for its 20th anniversary!

DreamWorks hasn’t confirmed the news just yet, but the film body of Canada’s Alberta Government has just re-rated the film’s trailer, which is a pretty good sign that it’s happening.

Released three years after its predecessor, Shrek 2 is often regarded as one of the best movie sequels of all time (not to mention the best film in the Shrek franchise). With a solid critical score of 89% on Rotten Tomatoes, the film follows Shrek (Mike Myers) and Fiona (Cameron Diaz) as they venture to the Kingdom of Far Far Away to meet the latter’s royal parents, who are shocked to discover that she didn’t marry the human Prince Charming (Rupert Everett) they envisioned as her future husband.

The film first hit theatres in May 2004, which would suggest a May 2024 slot for its re-release. This would also coincide with this year’s planned opening for Universal Studios Florida’s new DreamWorks land, where guests have recently spotted Shrek’s swamp and famous outhouse under construction.

DreamWorks has been struggling as of late. Its latest release, Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken (2023), was a box office bomb, losing the studio roughly $100 million, and it underwent massive layoffs in October 2023. The studio’s most recent standout was, in fact, another Shrek release: Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022) took home $485.2 million.
