Kevin McNally gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of Joshamee Gibbs in the blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, beginning with the first installment, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003). McNally’s portrayal of Gibbs, Captain Jack Sparrow’s loyal ally, endeared him to audiences worldwide.

However, the actor was recently arrested and faces charges of domestic abuse, according to reports from The Sun.

McNally was reportedly scheduled to attend a Dr. Who fan convention in Los Angeles this past weekend, but was removed from the lineup as the organizers sited “personal reasons.” The report from The Sun indicates that McNally, 67, was arrested and ” held on suspicion of inflicting an injury that caused a traumatic condition on a victim who was his current or former spouse, cohabitant, or child’s parent.”

McNally posted bail and is scheduled to appear in court next month, the report states. McNally’s wife, Phyllis Logan, denied to The Sun knowing about his arrest.

While McNally made appearances in each of the five films– including Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (2006), Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (2007), Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011), and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017)– there were questions about his return to the franchise for the sixth installment. Now, these charges may be even more reason for Disney to move forward with a reboot.

When reports came forward in 2021 that Disney was moving on from Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow amid allegations from Amber Heard, McNally came to the support of his fellow co-star.

“I’ve never seen a hint of a dark side to him,” he said. “I see a great humanitarian and a beautiful human being. I don’t see any impediment for him coming back and playing Jack Sparrow.”

Of course, Johnny Depp has since been removed from the franchise— at least as far as anyone knows– and Disney is reportedly exploring a new direction. One script that came forward involved a female-led cast, headlined by Margot Robbie. Executive Producer Jerry Bruckheimer revealed back in 2022 that this film was being put put on the back burner for the time being for another script, but nothing has come of it as of yet.

No other information on McNally’s arrest has been given at this time.
