After Robert Downey Jr.’s poignant sacrifice as Iron Man/Tony Stark in Avengers: Endgame and Chris Evans passing on the Captain America mantle, the Marvel Cinematic Universe faces even greater and more formidable challenges. Earth’s Mightiest Heroes stand on the brink of the unknown as they enter the Multiverse Saga.

Shortly thereafter, the MCU bid farewell to fan-favorite character Scarlet Witch/Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) as she ventured beyond the familiar movie Marvel universe, undertaking a character-defining journey in the Disney+ (Disney Plus) original series WandaVision (2021).

According to the latest reports, it seems as if Elizabeth Olsen’s fan-favorite character will return to the MCU following her apparent death in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022).

Marvel Studios, and by extension Marvel President Kevin Feige, seem to want to make a Scarlet Witch solo movie, according to Hollywood insider My Time To Shine Hello.

Responding to a fan’s question about whether Olsen’s Scarlet Witch will ever get her very own solo film, the insider source replies that the Scarlet Witch film would likely debut between Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars — or potentially even after the likely final film in the current Multiverse Saga:

Yes either between Avengers 5 and 6 or after Secret Wars
Ahmad Hasimi: Is the Scarlet Witch movie ever happening? @MyTimeToShineH

Fans like Batnarc have begun to wonder exactly how this new Scarlet Witch project will approach the character, whose most recent portrayal was as the main antagonist of the 2022 Doctor Strange sequel, after being a hero in the Avengers and having her own family-centric Disney+ character arc in WandaVision:

I wonder if she’s gonna be portrayed as a villain or an anti hero?

Another big question is whether this will be the end for Olsen’s character, as Secret Wars has been rumored to commence Kevin Feige’s big plan of bringing all Marvel Multiverses together before nuking the existing continuity for a totally fresh reboot, recasting key Avengers roles like Iron Man, Black Widow, and Captain America with completely new actors:
I wonder if she’ll be killed off in secret wars?

However, there’s another promising possibility for the character of the Scarlet Witch, and it has to do with the establishment of Mutantkind and the MCU’s version of the X-Men.

Fans are speculating that — just like in many of the Marvel Comics — Wanda Maximoff could be revealed to be a mutant so she can join the X-Men “Mutant Saga” after Secret Wars:

@NoCapIntended: If its releasing in between the Avengers movies, shes gonna be important for Secret Wars, if its after SW, she’ll probably be revealed to be a mutant so that she’ll play a big role in the mutant saga.

Considering that in some versions of the comic book continuity, where Wanda Maximoff is the daughter of Magneto/Erik Lehnsherr himself, the condensing of the MCU into a single continuity post-Secret Wars could definitely see a mutant (or mutant-adjacent) Scarlet Witch.

Additionally, many WandaVision spinoff projects are in the works, like the upcoming Agatha: Darkhold Diaries Disney+ Original show (formerly Agatha: Coven of Chaos and Agatha: House of Harkness) starring Kathryn Hahn as Agatha Harkness and Heartstopper star Joe Locke as (presumably) Billy Maximoff/Billy Kaplan, Wanda’s son and the superhero Wiccan from Marvel Comics.

On top of that, a Paul Bettany-led Vision Quest and even the rumored Witches’ Road Marvel Studios Special Presentation have also been said to be in the works, making the likelihood of Olsen’s return basically inevitable.

The comic book movie world will more than likely see Scarlet Witch make a solo movie comeback — when and where, though, is up to Marvel Studios and Disney to decide.

More on Marvel’s Agatha: Darkhold Diaries

Marvel has something new in the works following Secret Invasion (2023) and Captain Marvel 2 following The Marvels (2023), and it’s not just The Fantastic Four.

The upcoming WandaVision spinoff, Agatha: Darkhold Diaries (previously titled Agatha: Coven of Chaos and Agatha: House of Harkness), sees Kathryn Hahn returning to her role as Agatha Harkness. The series, helmed by head writer Jac Schaeffer and directors Gandja Monteiro and Rachel Goldberg, with Kevin Feige as executive producer, follows Agatha as she leads a witches’ coven, seeking redemption from her past misdeeds and promising to disrupt the established Marvel Cinematic Universe style. Official announcements have confirmed the involvement of several actors, including Aubrey Plaza, Ali Ahn, and Maria Dizzia, though details about their roles remain undisclosed.

A recent reveal introduced Joe Locke’s casting, likely as Billy Maximoff/Billy Kaplan, Wanda Maximoff’s son and the superhero Wiccan from Marvel Comics. Additionally, Sasheer Zamata is slated to portray Sorceress Jennifer Kale. Returning from WandaVision, Debra Jo Rupp will reprise her role as Mrs. Hart, and Fred Melamed will once again play Arthur Hart. Broadway legend Patti LuPone joins the cast as Lilia Calderu, an elder witch pivotal to the coven’s narrative.
