Right now, James Gunn is on top of the world. Not only did he direct the most successful superhero film of last year, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023), but he has become the head honcho for DC Studios. Now, the DC Universe is about to be completely rebooted with the Creature Commandos series and Superman: Legacy (2025), his DCU directorial debut.
But the DC Studio head can’t do it alone. In fact, he has already assembled some impressive people around him, including screenwriter Ana Nogueira and actors David Corenswet (Clark Kent/Superman), Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luthor), and Milly Alcock (Supergirl). However, if Gunn has his way, he’ll add two more iconic superhero names to that list.

During one of Gunn’s many Threads Q&As, a fan asked if he’d ever want to work with filmmakers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, especially since he was such a big fan of the Spider-Verse films. The Suicide Squad (2021) director revealed that he would not only want to work with them but also had just met with them, saying, “Yes. I saw them yesterday. I should have asked.”
While Phil Lord and Christopher Miller have created many iconic films, they are probably most well-known for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) and Across the Spider-Verse. These landmark films have been heralded as some of the best superhero and animated movies ever made. Naturally, fans would love to see what the people who brought Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) and Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) to the big screen do if they were working with DC Comics characters.

The first adaptation that came to fans’ minds was Batman Beyond, a futuristic sequel to the iconic Warner Bros. cartoon Batman: The Animated Series. Not only have Batman fans wanted a follow-up to the series, but it would also lend itself perfectly to the Spider-Verse style. It’s also been in the zeitgeist with the recent release of concept art from Yukhi Demers.
Other lesser-known but beloved DC heroes that came to mind were Static Shock and Green Arrow, as well as a revamp of The Flash. But no matter who Phil Lord and Chris Miller are brought in to cover, you know that it will be unlike anything else.
