Between visits to Animal Kingdom, Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, EPCOT, and 2 Disney Water Parks, Typhoon Lagoon, and Blizzard Beach- there is no shortage of fun at Walt Disney World Resort. But the Disney Property is home to another gem with many names over the years.
That’s right; I’m talking about Disney Springs! If you have not visited The Most Magical Place On Earth in many years, you are probably asking the common question…Is Disney Springs just Downtown Disney with a new name? The answer is yes, and this section of Disney World has expanded to include so much more!
Disney Springs Over The Years
Disney Springs WDW has changed so much, originally opening in 1975. At that time, the center was called Lake Buena Vista Village. As the goal of this area was clarified in the coming years, the name was changed to Walt Disney World Village in 1977. Some of the shops in Disney Village are still present today. The Christmas shop and toy story were among the earliest shopping spots for Guests to visit.
Throughout the 1970s, Disney Springs was known primarily as a place to shop and eat. As the nightlife scene expanded in the 1980s, Disney Springs expanded westward to welcome Guests to a new party scene, Pleasure Island. These clubs, restaurants, and lounges kept the party going for Disney Guests so they could enjoy the buzz of nightlife without leaving the Disney Property.
The original Disney Springs was also due for a name change, so it was renamed The Disney Village Marketplace. A rebrand and unification of the total area happened in 1995. Both areas were rebranded simply as Downtown Disney. This name was correct until the most recent retheme and significant renovation gave us the current Disney Springs. This overhaul happened in 2015.
Disney Springs Today
These days, you may still hear Guests refer to Disney Springs as the Disney Shopping Village or Downtown Disney. While technically, these names are incorrect; hardcore Disney fans likely won’t mind hearing these throwback terms.
Today, Disney Springs is divided into sections that include Town Center, West Side, The Landing, and Marketplace. The area features picturesque scenery, charming waterfront areas, themed architecture, and vibrant landscaping. It’s a pleasant place to stroll around, relax, and enjoy the ambiance, especially during the evenings when the lights and music create a magical atmosphere.
Where To Stay Near Disney Springs
If you are looking for a nearby Resort and don’t mind not staying at an official Disney World Resort, we recommend the Wyndham Lake Buena Vista. Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa is next to Disney Springs, offering easy walking access to the entertainment district.
