Chris Pratt has been a household name since he starred as Peter Quill/Star-Lord in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), and he might be leaving that behind.

Since then, Pratt has starred in several other franchises and continued his role as Star-Lord in the MCU for several years. Now, things will be different after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3(2023) for many reasons. It’s James Gunn’s final project with Marvel. Some of the cast have made it clear that their role in the MCU is over.
After the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, the crew has a new plan which includes dealing with the Higher Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji), the villain who also created Rocket. Bradley Cooper’s Rocket has to work with Dave Bautista’s Drax, Mantis (Pom Klementieff), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Nebula (Karen Gillan), and Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel) to fight off this sinister villain and keep their crew together.
For this cast, it’s the final hurrah in the MCU before saying goodbye. Spoilers are out there now that fans can see Guardians 3 in theaters. Chris Pratt opens up about his role and how the movie handles his character in the MCU, and reading anything more is definitely a spoiler, so if you want to remain spoiler-free, this is the moment to stop reading.
Pratt shared more about what he thinks Star-Lord needed to deal with, and that’s learning who he really is. The actor shares at the global press conference how the movie’s surprising twist was what Star-Lord needed to do and how it’s something that will be important going forward:
“So, yeah, in the beginning, he was running away from the death of his mother, but he got to pretend to be this character based on these pop culture icons of his childhood of the late-’80s. And so, he was dancing around, but all of that was, really he had found himself there. But it was kinda B.S., you know?”
Pratt explains that even though Peter lost his mother, he found a family in the Guardians crew, and even with Gamora, but it wasn’t helping him find who he was. In Guardians 3, Quill decides to listen to Mantis and learn to swim on his own and not try to jump from relationship to relationship, which means visiting his family on Earth.
Quill meets his grandfather at the end of the movie after admitting he is leaving the Guardians crew as it seems that Peter will learn who his family is before embarking on another adventure in the MCU. Fans know Quill will return because the post-credits leave the message, “The Legendary Star-Lord Will Return,” rather than saying the Guardians of the Galaxy will return.

It’s interesting because if Quill returns for another MCU project, what will that be? Marvel can’t just put him back into the next Guardians crew, or else the ending does not affect fans which would be sad to see. Pratt could end up getting himself his own Star-Lord movie which could be fun to see, but the real question is, what story is left for Star-Lord?
It’s hard to say because it feels like his story in Guardians 3 wrapped up perfectly, and it doesn’t feel right to bring him back for another adventure, but Kevin Feige has a plan, so fans will just have to wait and see.
