The long-awaited Avatar sequel is making news as we eagerly await its arrival in 2022. With the 2009 Avatar film being the highest-grossing movie of all time, a sequel is a must-do. Now, we’re able to check out new artwork and set photos revealed for the upcoming film.
The gap between the 2009 Avatar film and the 2022 new release was thankfully filled with the addition of Pandora the World of Avatar at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park in 2017 within Walt Disney World Resort. From flying on the back of a banshee with Avatar Flight of Passage to sailing down the calming river with Na’vi River Journey, and taking in every last awe-inspiring moment of the Disney Park’s bioluminescent land… it’s becoming increasingly difficult to wait for the sequel’s arrival.
It may be over a decade later, but we’re preparing to once again step into the blue-skinned alien environment on a galaxy unlike any other on the big screen. The release of director James Cameron’s Avatar sequel will be launching in theaters on December 16, 2022.
According to a report from Entertainment Weekly, Cameron has noted the sequel will introduce a new group of reef-dwelling Na’vi called the Metkayina. With the set being primarily underwater, this required “years of technological research and months of training actors to hold their breath for lengths that would impress even a Navy SEAL.” Check out some of the set photos released to Entertainment below:
While the official name of Avatar 2 has yet to be released, rumors suggest the name is “The Way of the Water”. The production started back in 2017 with a storyline set 14 years after the first Avatar film. The plot includes the former human soldier Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Na’vi warrior Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) settling down and starting a family. The film is said to follow along with Jake and Neytiri’s preteen child.
“Ultimately, the sequels are a story about family, and the lengths parents will go through to keep that family together and keep them safe,” producer Jon Landau explains. “I always say that Jim’s movies have universal themes — and really, there’s no more universal theme than family.”

Let’s not forget that James Cameron has revealed that while yes, the Avatar sequel will return in 2022, he also has plans to release a total of four sequels!
