Johnny Depp has been heavily featured in the media over the past few months as his legal battle with ex-wife Amber Heard has only become more focused on in the media.
Considering how large of a star Johnny Depp is, the allegations that he abused his former wife quickly became a claim that everyone wanted to know more about. Depp continues to state that Heard’s allegations are false, and he has not been proven guilty by any court of law. The $150 million suit will not be decided on until next spring.
That being said, we have seen Depp’s career take a dip due to the court case and the rippling effects that Heard’s allegations have caused. After U.K. tabloid The Sun wrote an article defaming Depp while calling him abusive, Depp sued the publication. The actor lost the battle with the tabloid as well as his appeal. Shortly after, Depp would lose two major roles. The Fantastic Beasts franchise helmed by Warner Bros. dropped the actor and recast him with Madds Mikkelson, and then Disney booted him from his iconic role of Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
Depp has played Jacks Sparrow since 2003, and audiences instantly fell in love with the clumsy pirate. Depp was able to create specific mannerisms and speech patterns for Sparrow, which became a unique character specific to the actor. When Guests visit a majority of the Disney Parks, including Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort, they will see Depp’s version of Captain Jack Sparrow out for meet and greets as well as in the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction. Needless to say, Disney’s decision to cut Depp and Jack Sparrow from the franchise was one that upset many.
There have been petitions circulating, collecting hundreds of thousands of signatures, and many fans who have decided to boycott the films as a whole. At the moment, there are two Pirates of the Caribbean films that are said to be worked on. One includes a female-led film that takes place in the same universe starring Margot Robbie. The other is Pirates of the Caribbean 6.

Recently, we have seen Depp easily slip back into character while talking to a young fan at the San Sebastian Film Festival. While there, he addressed not playing Jack Sparrow again. He did discuss how he was the one who brought the character to life, claiming a sort of ownership of the role. As he showed with the young fan, Depp can bring Sparrow to life whenever he wants.
Johnny Depp stated:
I suppose this is the positive side of having, in a strange way, given life to those characters like Captain Jack or whatever character that I was lucky enough to locate and bring to life the beauty of Captain Jack Sparrow. I’ll go to somebody’s house, man, I’ll perform at your kid’s birthday party at this point. I don’t need a company to do that. I can just do that myself and nobody can take that away. That’s the greatest pleasure of Jack Sparrow. I can travel with Captain Jack in a box – literally Captain Jack in a box – and when the opportunity is right and I’m able to go and visit people and places where the smiles and the laughs and the things that are important, the most important things in the world are on the line.
It is clear that Depp is confident that he will always own Sparrow, no matter what Disney decides to depict with the character.
