The Tree of Life is the icon of Disney’s Animal Kingdom and is home to the It’s Tough to be a Bug! attraction. Now, it looks as though the Tree of Life will be undergoing construction in the near future as we quickly approach the start of the 50th anniversary.

Disney has recently filed a permit for the location of the Tree of Life in Animal Kingdom for general construction.

This could be just generalized maintenance, such as painting, that Disney wants to do to ensure the structure is in its best shape and appeals to Guests. But it also could be relating to the upcoming 50th anniversary as Disney previously announced that Guests can look forward to something very similar to the Tree of Life Awakening come October 1, 2021, in honor of the 50th anniversary of Walt Disney World.

Disney Parks Blog has confirmed that Guests can look forward to “magical fireflies inhabiting the Tree of Life at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park” so Disney may be thinking about beginning to work on the theme park icon as we are now just days away from the start of the 50th celebrations.

We are also wondering if this permit was filed for something relating to It’s Tough to be a Bug! as this attraction is located inside the Tree of Life, meaning the permit’s location could be referring to It’s Tough to be a Bug or the Tree of Life itself.

At this time we are unsure what the permit is for exactly, but Inside the Magic will continue to update you as we get information.

In case you aren’t familiar, Disney describes the Tree of Life as:

The Tree of Life honors animals and the place they all share in the great Circle of Life.

At 145 feet tall, the massive tree towers over the land. Marvel at its gnarled roots and outstretched branches, then step closer to see the shapes of over 300 animals carved into the tree.
It’s an epic visual symbol of the diversity, beauty and interconnected nature of Earth’s creatures.

Look Closer

Stroll the picturesque Discovery Island Trails around the great tree for an close-up view of the animal carvings. You may even discover a famous mouse hiding among its branches!

Animal Encounters

Nestled amid the burrowing roots at the base of the Tree of Life is a serene landscape of pools, meadows and trees—home to a variety of live animals, including lemurs, flamingos, kangaroos and tortoises.
