Back on May 28, 2021, Disney and Emma Stone introduced the world to Estella, the feisty, young orphan who would grow up to become one of Disney’s most iconic villains (and fashion icons) — Cruella De Vil. Disney’s Cruella was a hit with fans, as it showed the Disney villain in a darker, grittier light — the movie currently has a 97% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Just about one week after the film’s premiere, it was revealed that Disney had a Cruella sequel in the works.

Well, now it has been officially confirmed that Emma Stone will be returning to play the eccentric heiress. Deadline confirmed that Disney had locked in their contract with Stone for the much-anticipated Cruella sequel.

Patrick Whitesell, executive chairman of Endeavor (formerly William Morris Endeavor) — the agency representing Ms. Stone — made the following statement:

“While the media landscape has been disrupted in a meaningful way for all distributors, their creative partners cannot be left on the sidelines to carry a disproportionate amount of the downside without the potential for upside. This agreement demonstrates that there can be an equitable path forward that protects artists and aligns studios’ interests with talent. We are proud to work alongside Emma and Disney, and appreciate the studio’s willingness to recognize her contributions as a creative partner. We are hopeful that this will open the door for more members of the creative community to participate in the success of new platforms.”

For a little while, it was uncertain as to whether or not Stone would return for the Cruella sequel, as rumors were swirling around that she was considering legal action against Disney in light of the Scarlett Johansson lawsuit. With the finalizing of Emma Stone’s contract for Cruella 2, those rumors can now be put to bed.

At this time, the details of Disney’s Cruella sequel are minimal — it, however, has been confirmed that director Craig Gillespie and screenwriter Tony McNamara will be returning to their roles for the sequel. It is unknown if Joel Fry or Paul Walter Hauser will return for their roles as Cruella’s trusty sidekicks Jasper and Horace.

No time frame for a release date or when filming will even begin has been released. Cruella is currently available to stream on Disney+ with Premier Access and will be available for all Disney+ subscribers on August 27.
