Films like Maleficent and Cruella have given many Disney fans a deeper understanding of some villains, and now, Gaston will be receiving the same treatment. As we have previously discussed, Disney+ had the idea to create a prequel series to showcase the little town and quiet village, which would bring back Luke Evans as Gaston and Josh Gad as LeFou (Louie). The show is titled The Little Town and will follow this plot:

Set in the iconic kingdom of Beauty and the Beast years before the Beast and Belle’s epic romance, the series will follow Gaston (Evans) and LeFou (Gad) as they set off with LeFou’s step-sister, Tilly (Briana Middleton), after a surprising revelation from her past comes to light, sending the unlikely trio off on an unexpected journey filled with romance, comedy, and adventure. While the mysteries of the past are uncovered and the dangers of the present grow, old friends and new enemies reveal that this familiar kingdom harbors many secrets.

The nature of Gaston and LeFou’s relationship in terms of it just being a friendship or something more has been debated for quite some time, especially once the live-action Beauty and the Beast came out. Now, Gad is addressing LeFou’s sexuality. After speaking with Variety, Gad noted:

“You’re going to have to tune in when this show airs to see what we’re working up, but in the process of working on it, we’re asking ourselves every relevant question about these characters and endeavoring to do right by them and by this world. I think that we have origin stories here that are unbelievably exciting because they’re unexpected. And I think ‘expect the unexpected’ is all I can really say. And not just with regard to LeFou and Gaston but to a lot of the new characters that we’re introducing.”

From this, it seems that the most interesting thing we can take away from this is that LeFou’s sexuality will be “unexpected.” From the animated film, it would seem that LeFou being a part of the LGBTQ+ community would be slightly unexpected; however, from the live-action film, many do expect to see LeFou in that light. Gad also mentioned that many new characters are being introduced that will have unexpected twists as well, so it seems we will likely need to collect a few more puzzle pieces before we can understand what exactly Gad means.
