On June 2 — with the help of Marvel President Kevin Feige, Ant-Man star Paul Rudd, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier star Anthony Mackie, and more — Avengers Campus had its Grand Opening celebration. The next day, the new land, which does not officially open until June 4, hosted some real-life superheroes from the Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County.

Staff from the Food Bank were able to spend 2 hours in the new area and enjoy the delicious food, take pictures with their favorite characters, and ride the newest attraction, WEB SLINGERS: A Spider-Man Adventure.

Second Harvest CEO Harald Herrmann spoke to The Orange County Register about the theme park experience and what it meant to him and his team — who have been through a particularly rough year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I watched the team rise,” Herrmann said. “They truly are like superheroes. We happen to be in Avengers Campus, but those are the superheroes in my book.

Many families right now are still struggling to get back on their feet,” Herrmann said. “Today we’re still two and a half times the pre-COVID volume of food. It’s unprecedented for us in our history to have this level of demand this quickly.”

Disneyland Resort has worked closely with the Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County since 2014. In 2019 alone, Disney donated over 20,000 meals to the food bank and Disney’s VoluntEARS frequently volunteer at the food bank. Disneyland also donated thousands of pounds of food to Second Harvest after the pandemic forced the theme parks to close.

The Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County workers were the first Guests to enter the land after the Grand Opening ceremony and the last group of invited Guests before the theme park opens to all Guests visiting California Adventure Park.

Disneyland President Ken Potrock shared the excitement of having some real-life superheroes visit the new superhero land.

I am inspired by how our community came together to support one another through the pandemic, especially those who helped feed people in need. As we open #AvengersCampus filled with super heroes, it’s only fitting that we share this moment with the folks from Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County and Community Action Partnership of Orange County, whose heroic actions helped our community when we needed it the most.

The only way to ensure your visit to Avengers Campus is to obtain a boarding group for WEB SLINGERS, which Guests will have two opportunities to get — once at 7 a.m. and again at 12 p.m. Boarding groups can only be joined the day of your visit. Guests who do not get a WEB SLINGERS pass will still have the chance to try to visit the land by waiting in a standby queue that will be available.

It should be noted that the standby queue does not guarantee access to the land.
