According to a new report from the Orange County Register, despite the Disneyland Resort being open since April 30, less than half of the Resort’s 32,000 Cast Members have returned to work.
Why is that, and what it could mean for the Disneyland Resort?
The Disneyland Resort was closed for over a year before it fully reopened to Guests. As the Resort is still in its phased reopening, it is not surprising that not all Cast Members have been recalled.
During the height of the pandemic when Disneyland remained closed, the Walt Disney Company furloughed and laid off a massive amount of its theme park Cast Members. Disneyland is still operating at a modified capacity at both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure, and although they are slowly increasing capacity and allowing more Guests into the Parks, many are left questioning when Disney will call back the over 15,000 Cast Members who still haven’t returned.
The report from the Orange County Register states the following, based on information from Disney officials:
The Disneyland resort has 15,000 cast members currently working and expects to hire about 1,000 more this summer, according to Disneyland officials.
Disneyland laid off or furloughed thousands of cast members — Disney parlance for employees — during the COVID-19 pandemic after state officials refused to allow California theme parks to reopen for more than a year.
Before the layoffs and furloughs, Disney employed more than 100,000 at its U.S. theme parks — 32,000 at Disneyland and 77,000 at Disney World.
It’s unclear if or when Disneyland — the largest employer in Orange County prior to the pandemic — will ever return to pre-pandemic staffing levels.
While the Orange County Register says that they are unsure if staffing levels at Disneyland will ever return to their pre-pandemic numbers, we are hoping that with the additions of Avengers Campus and Galaxy’s Edge, more and more Guests will visit the Disneyland Resort and hopefully prompt Disney to bring back as many Cast Members as possible. As more dining locations and attractions reopen, hopefully, more Cast Members will be recalled, as well.
Currently, Guests visiting Disneyland or Disney California Adventure need an advanced online reservation. Downtown Disney is open and does not need a reservation for entry.
