On May 5, Disney World announced that they would be removing the mandatory temperature screenings for Cast Members beginning on May 8. Guests visiting Walt Disney World theme parks will not have to undergo temperature screenings beginning on May 16. Universal Orlando Resort soon followed suit and will begin phasing out their mandatory temperature checks starting tomorrow.
The news was first released by local Florida news source ClickOrlando, who released a statement from Universal Orlando Resort:
“The health and safety of our guests and team members is always our top priority. We continue to review the CDC guidelines and work with local health officials as we update our health and safety protocols,” a Universal spokeswoman said in a statement. “Based on guidance from government and local health officials, as of Thursday, May 6, we are implementing three feet of social distancing throughout our destination and are no longer conducting temperature checks. All other existing health and safety protocols will remain in place.”
In addition to removing the mandatory temperature screenings, Universal Orlando will also be lowering its social distancing guidelines in the theme parks. Currently, Guests are to maintain six feet of social distancing. Beginning on May 6, 2021, Guests visiting Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure, as well as CityWalk and Volcano Bay, only need to maintain a physical distance of three feet.
Although temperature checks will no longer be done and social distancing guidelines are being relaxed at Universal Orlando, there are still COVID-19 safety guidelines that all Guests must follow while visiting the theme parks. Guests will still be required to wear face masks, except while eating in designated dining areas. Guests must also use hand sanitizer when required by Universal Orlando Team Members.
While the news was released through the media first, Universal Orlando has recently updated its website to reflect the new change. The Universal Orlando website states:
We’re excited to enhance your Universal experience with the latest safety updates from local health and government officials. There are no more temperature checks upon entry. And Social Distancing between travel parties is now reduced to three feet (1 meter). Still, most of our original safety protocols remain unchanged—from wearing face coverings across our Resort to our ongoing dedication to cleanliness and sanitization.
