On June 9, a new series will premiere on Disney+ that takes a look at one of the most popular villains in the Marvel Cinematic Universe — the God of Mischief, Loki. The series will take place after the events of Avengers: Endgame and involve Loki in alternate timelines and the havoc he wreaks and his dealings with the Time Variance Authority.

Tom Hiddleston — who has played the titular MCU villain for over a decade — sat down with Entertainment Weekly to talk about the new series and where Loki has been and what this new series — appropriately called Loki —  will mean for the character.

“I love this idea [of] Loki’s chaotic energy somehow being something we need. Even though, for all sorts of reasons, you don’t know whether you can trust him. You don’t know whether he’s going to betray you. You don’t why he’s doing what he’s doing,” continued Hiddleston to EW. “If he’s shapeshifting so often, does he even know who he is? And is he even interested in understanding who he is? Underneath all those masks, underneath the charm and the wit, which is kind of a defense anyway, does Loki have an authentic self? Is he introspective enough or brave enough to find out? I think all of those ideas are all in the series — ideas about identity, ideas about self-knowledge, self-acceptance, and the difficulty of it.”

Hiddleston’s debut as the Loki in the MCU came in 2011 when he appeared as Thor’s trickster brother in the original God of Thunder film Thor. Since then, Hiddleston has fully embraced his character and what it means to play him.

“Rather than ownership, it’s a sense of responsibility I feel to give my best every time and do the best I can because I feel so grateful to be a part of what Marvel Studios has created. I just want to make sure I’ve honored that responsibility with the best that I can give and the most care and thought and energy.”

Loki will give Hiddleston the chance to examine who Loki is. Is he all good? Is he all bad? No one is ever just one of those things. Fans will be able to see Loki in all his glory and decide for themselves. Based on his past in the MCU, it won’t be surprising if the fan’s love for Loki continues to grow.
