Disney is at the top of its game when it comes to fireworks. That is because it only hires the best and brightest to produce its nighttime spectaculars. The Walt Disney Company is looking to add to their incredible team and recently published a job posting looking for a Principal Fireworks Designer.
According to the Disney Careers website:
The Fireworks & Special Effects Principal Designer serves as the creative leader and overall represetative of the Disney Live Entertainment Fireworks & Special Effects Design Department…As the leader, the Fireworks & Special Effects Principal Designer directs all special effects design (including pyrotechnics), helping to prioritize, organize and problem solve during the entire course of the project.
While this may sound like the coolest job in the world (who doesn’t want to create a Disney fireworks show?), Disney isn’t just looking for anyone. They are looking for someone with years of experience in the entertainment industry to help bring their shows to life.
This position is specific to the Walt Disney World Resort, which, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, had shows in all four of its theme parks — EPCOT, Magic Kingdom, Disney’s Animal Kingdom, and Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
Some responsibilities of this amazing position include:
- Develop and/or execute special effects designs for live shows and facility infrastructure when required
- Demonstrate commitment to both on-going personal and departmental education for Walt Disney World and industry standards
- Natural collaborative ability to make sense out of diverse multidisciplinary requirements and to bring the project goals into focus for everyone involved
Last March, Disney World announced that all four of its theme parks and water parks would be closing amid the COVID-19 outbreak. The parks were closed for four months and began their phased reopening in July 2020. Popular stage shows and nighttime spectaculars were temporarily suspended to promote social distancing and other health and safety measures, however.
Fortunately, Disney World has slowly been reintroducing entertainment to its resort. Most recently, Disney announced that the Festival of the Lion King stage show will be back this summer at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. You can visit the show’s official webpage for the most up-to-date information regarding performances.
At a recent shareholders meeting, Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Chapek spoke about bringing back entertainment to Walt Disney World.
“You know one of the drawbacks of obviously of the pandemic in terms of our limited reopening is that the number of actual shows that we can have are greatly diminished because of social distancing and we’re still trying to figure out exactly as we scale back up our operations at our park our enterainemt how those will look going forward in the future because right now we’re obviously trying to limit contact with Guests and with each other but we’re working on it, we’re trying to figure that out.”
Disney has recently started testing fireworks after hours at both Magic Kingdom Park and EPCOT. Hopefully, this new job posting means that Guests will be able to finally see fireworks shows sooner rather than later!
However, at this time, Disney has not officially announced the return of any nighttime spectaculars at Walt Disney World.
