Prince Edward and Nancy Tremaine are back.

At the end of last year, during Investors Day 2020, Disney confirmed that the sequel to the musical feature film, Enchanted (2007) would be coming exclusively to Disney+ with Amy Adams returning as Giselle. Shortly after, Patrick Dempsey – who plays love interest Robert Phillip – was announced to join Adams in the next instalment of the franchise.

Aside from this initial news, as well as an update that the film had begun filming in LA and Ireland, nothing else had dropped about Disenchanted. Until now, that is.

In an interview with JLGB Virtual via Zoom, Enchanted composer Alan Menken revealed that Idina Menzel (Tremaine) and James Marsden (Edward) will be starring alongside Adams and Dempsey in the Enchanted sequel. It’s nice to finally have an answer for whether the original four leads would be reprising their roles, and it’s certain to have increased the anticipation and excitement over the upcoming live-action movie.

Back in January, Inside the Magic speculated over what the filming locations might mean, hinting at a possible Andalasia – the film’s animated fantasy world – setting in Ireland.

Talking about Enchanted in the interview, Menken said:

“Enchanted was one of the best ideas, ever. Best premises ever, for a Disney musical. That character going from animation into the real world.”

Menken, who has composed the music for many Walt Disney films such as Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, and The Little Mermaid, will be joined again by composer Stephen Schwartz (Pocahontas), and Adam Shankman (Hairspray, upcoming Hocus Pocus sequel), who is set to direct. It will be interesting to see if the film uses Disney animation alongside the live-action element, like in Enchanted.

Many fans will remember the characters of Prince Edward and Nancy Tremaine from the first film. Marsden’s Edward was frivolous and exuberant, while Nancy Tremaine (Menzel) offered a modicum of reality to the otherwise bizarre set of events. Following Idina Menzel’s casting announcement, Disenchanted might even draw in her legions of Frozen fans.

What is Enchanted?

The synopsis of Enchanted is:

“The beautiful Princess Giselle is banished by evil Queen Narissa from her magical, musical animated land and finds herself in the gritty reality of the streets of modern-day Manhattan. Shocked by this strange new environment that doesn’t operate on a “happily ever after” basis, Giselle is now adrift in a chaotic world badly in need of enchantment. But when Giselle begins to fall in love with a charmingly flawed divorce lawyer who has come to her aid – even though she is already promised to a perfect fairy tale Prince back home – she has to wonder: Can a storybook view of romance survive in the real world?”

Who are Prince Edward and Nancy Tremaine?

Prince Edward, the stepson of Evil Queen Narissa (Susan Sarandon) and heir to the throne, is first introduced hunting ogres before hearing Giselle’s song and ultimately following her from the animated world of Andalasia, to the neon landscape of New York City. Nancy Tremaine is the long-time girlfriend of Robert and gets tangled in the princess’s drama after going to his apartment and finding Giselle in a towel.

Only time will tell if more of Enchanted‘s original cast will join Adams, Dempsey, Marsden and Menzel. Could Timothy Spall’s Nathaniel return? And what of the Evil Queen? Will Susan Saradon reprise her role as Narissa?
