Fans were excited when they learned about the Saved By The Bell reboot, however, it didn’t take long before the show caused some controversy.

Selena Gomez, who is widely known for her role as Alex Russo in the hit Disney Channel series, Wizards of Waverly Placerecently had a kidney transplant from her close friend, Francia Raisa. Gomez has spoken out about the transplant and informed her fans, on several different occasions, why this had to happen and how grateful she is to have Raisa as a close friend.

In the recent Saved By The Bell reboot, fans quickly noticed a joke that was made about Gomez’s transplant, which fans did not take lightly. In fact, NBCUniversal has now issued an apology amidst the very quick backlash the company received.

In case you missed it, in the newly released episode, a group of students speculates on if the transplant received by Gomez was even true. It then leads to one of them arguing it was Justin Beiber’s mom and then another student suggests singer and ex-close friend, Demi Lovato, is the one who helped Gomez out with the kidney transplant.

It didn’t take long before fans took to social media, and “Respect Selena Gomez” instantly became trending. Variety is now reporting a statement made about the joke and now NBCUniversal will be making a donation to help Gomez’s fund.

“We apologize. It was never our intention to make light of Selena’s health,” NBCUniversal said. “We have been in touch with her team and will be making a donation to her charity, The Selena Gomez Fund for Lupus Research at USC.”
