When rumors of a Walt Disney Studios live-action The Little Mermaid adaptation first started circulating in 2016, fans of the original 1989 animated feature film were abuzz with excitement.

Now, after years of cast and crew announcements — Lin-Manuel Miranda and Marc Platt were confirmed as producers in 2016, Rob Marshall was confirmed as director in 2018, and Melissa McCarthy (Ursula), Halle Bailey (Ariel), Jacob Tremblay (Flounder), Jonah Hauer-King (Prince Eric), Awkwafina (Scuttle), and Daveed Diggs (role unknown) were cast throughout 2019 — production is finally set to get underway in the next few weeks!

Originally, the live-action version of the The Little Mermaid was slated to begin shooting in March — sets had already been constructed at London’s Pinewood Studios — but production was abandoned amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Now, a Halle Bailey Instagram fan account has shared a live stream in which Halle indicates that she will be leaving in a couple of weeks to begin shooting in London.

The caption reads:

Chloe and Halle just did a live stream and they pretty much confirmed Production on little mermaid stars soon saying they only have a couple of live streams left. So I’m assuming it’s probably gonna start in December. Remember we already confirmed the choreographer for the film is already in London so there is work being done behind the scenes and actors just have to arrive 🤔. It also seems Chloe is not going with her, at least for the beginning. So happy to have some kind of confirmation 😭 now we wait for more news

Like all other movies that have restarted production amid the ongoing pandemic, there are undoubtedly a number of health and safety protocols in-place to keep cast and crew members safe on set.

At this time, no official release date for the live-action Little Mermaid adaptation has been released.
