Hong Kong Disneyland is closing its gates for the third time since the pandemic began. This latest closure was sparked by a spike in what the South China Morning Post calls Hong Kong’s “fourth wave.”

In response, the Hong Kong government led by Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-Ngor announced Monday that tougher measures will be set in place which includes the reclosure of theme parks. However, while Hong Kong Disneyland was assumed to be included among Hong Kong’s theme parks, it was not mentioned by name nor was there any official word from the Disney resort itself. Now, we have that confirmation from Disney Parks.

Disney announced today that Hong Kong Disneyland will close again today (December 1 local time) and will officially begin its temporary closure tomorrow (December 2).

“As required by the government and in line with preventive efforts taking place across Hong Kong, Hong Kong Disneyland park will temporarily close beginning December 2. We are in close contact with health authorities and the government about the situation and will announce a reopening date once they determine it is advisable.

The park is scheduled to be closed today (December 1).”

Hong Kong Disneyland will now be the first Disney theme park to have closed three times as the world tries to carry on amid the pandemic. It is unclear when it will reopen again, but looking back at recent months, there is hope that yet another reopening will be here sooner than we think.

The third closure occurs just after Hong Kong Disneyland finally completed the construction of its new Castle of Magical Dreams, and began celebrating its 15 Anniversary. Since that second reopening, it has continued to remain closed on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Hong Kong Disneyland first reopened on June 18 after being closed for 143 days but suffered its second closure on July 15. It remained shuttered for another 73 days before reopening again on September 25. One has to wonder if this third closure will be longer or shorter.
