Now that Orange County has found itself once again in the state’s most restrictive purple tier, Disneyland is adjusting once again. Disneyland’s Downtown Disney District and has made changes to accommodate outdoor only dining. Currently, Disneyland and Disney California Adventure are still temporarily closed and are not permitted to open until the county reaches the least restrictive yellow tier.

Now, as we’ve learned from @DisneylandTourGuide on Instagram, Disneyland has made the difficult decision to cancel their annual Grad Nite for the 2021 year. According to the Instagram post, Disney sent out an e-mail to schools that usually participate explaining the cancellation. The e-mail from the Disneyland Resort Youth Programs team read as follows:

“With recently announced state guidelines that place opening large theme parks in the most restrictive tier, and public health officials indicating that Orange County likely will not reach that tier in the near term, we do not anticipate a reopening timeline in the foreseeable future and therefore we are unable to move forward with Grad Nite 2021. Given Grad Nite events require a substantial amount of planning and coordination—in addition to travel accommodations and fundraising efforts for your students months in advance—we felt that this was the right decision to make at this time.

We know how disappointing this news will be, and we thank you for your understanding during these challenging and unprecedented times. We look forward to celebrating your students in years to come.”

This is so unfortunate because we’re sure that a lot of high school graduates look forward to this event to celebrate their graduation. The cancelation of 2021 grad nites comes months after Disney made the decision to cancel all 2020 grad nites at Disneyland Resort earlier this year.

Although this is not the best news, it does not come as a shock. Disneyland has had to change a lot in order to keep Guests and Cast Members healthy and safe. The resort has also announced the absence of hand-pulled candy canes this year. Downtown Disney’s Catal Restaurant had to cancel their Breakfast with Santa event as well.

Hopefully events like this can resume again in the future.
