Rey’s (Daisy Ridley) parentage is a major theme throughout the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Her quest to find out who her parents are and, as a result, who she is, drives nearly everything the character does.

Throughout Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens and Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi viewers are left as in-the-dark about Rey’s lineage as she is. Finally, in Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker, the final film in the Skywalker Saga, we learn that Rey is, in fact, descended from an Emperor Palpatine clone.

Now, however, Ridley has revealed that Rey’s path almost took a very different turn. In an interview with Josh Gad on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night, Ridley said:

“At the beginning, they were toying with an Obi-Wan connection. There were different versions and at one point she was no one… it kept changing.”

Twitter user @Scavenger_Jakku shared a clip of Ridley and Gad’s chat.

Even though Lucasfilm eventually scrapped the plan for Rey to be descended from Obi-Wan Kenobi, social media has gone wild with the #ReyKenobi hashtag.

Thinking about this TROS concept art and it all makes sense now. I think it is poetic that a Kenobi could have saved a Skywalker. The Water fight could have been a reversal of the ROTS fight. The the potential narrative themes wow #ReyKenobi (I also love Rey Nobody so)

@DirectedbyRian shared a poignant post referencing Obi-Wan and Anakin’s relationship:

the implications of rey kenobi saving a skywalker from the dark side

@NoOnesEverGone9 agreed with how poignant an Obi-Wan connection would have been, writing:

Rey Kenobi, would have been a symbolic reconciliation for Anakin and Obi-wan as their grandchildren Rey and Ben became life partners. Which would have united the Skywalker and Kenobi families together forever.

Some Star Wars fans, however, are of the opinion that “Just Rey” choosing her own path and ultimately taking the Skywalker name is the most meaningful ending of all.

What are your thoughts on Rey Kenobi? Do you like Rey’s storyline or do you wish Lucasfilm and Disney would have gone in the different direction with the sequel movies?
