By now, we’ve all seen at least one quarantine first birthday party on social media. But, we guarantee you haven’t seen one like this yet! Baby gorilla, Grace, part of the Disney’s Animal Kingdom gorilla family, just celebrated her first birthday.

The adorable Grace was born on May 1, 2019. The Orlando Disney theme park team took good care of the baby girl gorilla, giving her special treatment and a princess-themed party on her big day!

The Disney Parks Blog shared details about Princess Grace the Gorilla’s party, sharing that the Animal Kingdom animal care experts “created a cardboard princess carriage attached to plastic horses by paper chains for Grace and her family to play with. There was also a cardboard castle and colorful piñata. The materials we used in the decorations are enrichment items we give the gorillas as a special treat – perfect for a birthday surprise!”

Grace even received a birthday “cake” perfect for a little gorilla! It featured blocks of ice with berries and currants for the gorillas to pick out as the ice melts. Disney’s team also froze pureed sweet potatoes and kiwis and cut them into shapes for another “birthday surprise.” Sounds like a wonderful day on the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail!

Disney’s Animal Kingdom loves a good baby animal name back story and we love how Grace’s moniker came about. Her name honors the Gorilla Rehabilitation and Conservation Education Center (GRACE) in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The GRACE gorilla sanctuary aids young gorillas orphaned by poaching.

The DAK team shared that baby Grace’s mother, Kashata, and father, Gino, were selected to breed as part of the Species Survival Plan overseen by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. This program ensures that critically endangered species like gorillas are bred responsibly in captivity.
