When we think back to Disney and Sony’s fight to keep Spider-Man in the MCU, it’s safe to say that most of our concern was focused on preserving continuity. had this dominating feeling that Sony was going to abruptly pull Spider-Man out of ‘s proverbial toy chest, like a studio canceling a TV show. And they would then go make its own Spider-verse movies, essentially retconning everything from : Civil War to Spider-Man: Far From Home.

But Tom Holland, the latest actor to play Spider-Man/Peter Parker, now confirms that those fears were far from accurate. Sony Pictures had–and still has–a plan to remove Spider-Man from the MCU. And, according to Holland, it was a “really, really wonderful idea.”
He said:
“[The] future for Spider-Man was still very bright with Sony and we had a really, really wonderful idea how we could sort of transition into a Spider-Man without the MCU and Tom Rothman and Amy Pascal were really confidant that they were gonna do justice and make a film of the calibre that Spider-Man requires.”

Of course, the actual plans for that transition remain unclear and Holland is glad that Sony was able to shelf the idea for now and so grateful that now-former Disney CEO Bob Iger ensured get at least one more in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“But that said,” he continued, “I’m really glad to be back in the MCU and to have the team back together because I kind of feel like it’s where he belongs now. I’m really grateful that Bob Iger and Tom Rothman allowed me to be a part of the process of bringing him home, it was a pretty cool experience and also the best bragging rights ever, I saved Spider-Man”

The future is still unclear for Sony’s intended Spider-Man Universe. Its upcoming superhero films Venom 2 starring Tom Hardy and Morbius starring Jared Leto are said to be interconnected, and there has been talk having the Venom-centered Spider-Man universe parallel and even reference the MCU. But it seems like, just in case it’s needed, Sony still has a plan to remove Spidey from the MCU, if it were to come to that.
Marvel’s third installment of Spider-Man’s Homecoming Series is set to be released in July 2021.
