With all the buzz surrounding The Mandalorian and as fans continue to anticipate the fall 2020 premiere of season two of the Disney+ series, we’ve been wondering: What’s next for Mando? According to a recent report and given some statements from Disney officials, it looks like Disney might want to come out with a prequel film for The Mandalorian. Here’s why.
If you’re unfamiliar with The Mandalorian, here’s a brief synopsis to catch you up:
After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the Star Wars universe. “The Mandalorian” is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. We follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy, far from the authority of the New Republic.
A few months ago, Disney CEO Bob Iger spoke with Variety about The Mandalorian and shared his thoughts on the success of the series just a couple episodes into its first season. Iger said, “The Mandalorian is already proving to be a big thing, so if that series proves to be so compelling that we reverse engineer it into a theatrical release, a two-hour film or whatever, O.K.”
So already from that interview, it was clear that possibly turning The Mandalorian into a film or film series instead of a television series was on the Disney CEO’s mind. There’s no denying that the show was a huge hit for Disney’s streaming service as soon as it launched on November 12, and plenty of Star Wars fans took to the internet to say that the show was the best Star Wars series of all time (even a better Star Wars show than Clone Wars). Many even shared that they canceled their Disney+ subscriptions and plan to re-subscribe when The Mandalorian season two debuts this fall. And given the worldwide response to The Child — popularly known as Baby Yoda among Star Wars fans and pop culture buffs alike — we wouldn’t be surprised if Disney wanted to capitalize on the character beyond just merchandise.

Now, a recent report by an entertainment site known for sharing rumors (and some rumors that then prove to be true) says that some sources indicate that Disney wants to come out with a prequel film to The Mandalorian. Disney and Lucasfilm haven’t confirmed this, so take it with a grain of salt. But given The Mandalorian‘s success and the incredible Baby Yoda fanbase, it would make sense for Disney to want to bring Mando to the big screen. Although if it were a prequel story, would The Child even be in the film? Signs point to no.
We’re not sure what a Mando prequel would look like, or even if Disney would want it to be a theatrical release like Iger hinted at a few months back. It seems to us like it would make more sense for the prequel film to be exclusive to Disney+ since that’s the home of The Mandalorian anyway, especially if the film were to be a backstory on Mando’s character.
But if Disney wants to make a prequel that follows Baby Yoda and how he got so far from home…now that’s something we’d buy tickets to see in theaters over and over again.
