Disney’s Lunar New Year is bringing so much magic, cultural representation, fun, and more to Disney California Adventure this year. But by far one of our favorite elements of the festival has got to be Mickey and Minnie’s new outfits, designed by award-winning couture fashion designer Guo Pei.
Mickey and Minnie’s New Outfits
Facilitated by the Asian Couture Federation, Mickey and Minnie’s new outfits were designed by Chinese designer Guo Pei in honor of Lunar New Year at the Disney parks. Guo Pei is an award-winning, world renowned designer whose fashion has been celebrated across the globe and has even been featured at The MET in New York City.
Guo Pei is known for her devotion and care for the preservation of the art of Chinese embroidery and other traditional Chinese styles that have been around for centuries. She shared some of the inspiration behind the outfits she designed for Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse, as well as what the seeing the designs at the Disney Parks means to her.
“I love all things Disney. I especially love Mickey and Minnie Mouse. And the moment they stepped out in the costume I designed, it was a dream come true,” she shared in an interview Annie Yu — the Vice President of Costuming for Disney Parks Live Entertainment — at the media event for Lunar New Year at Disney California Adventure on January 17. “My inspiration comes from Chinese culture, and this year is the year of the mouse — also the year of Mickey and Minnie. Through my designs, I wish to convey the richness of Chinese culture to the entire world.”
Guo Pei also shared the message she hopes to share through her designs: “I would like to represent all Chinese people using our Chinese tradition to wish everyone in the world a very happy Chinese new year. Gong xi fa cai (恭禧發財)!”
You can meet Mickey and Minnie in their new outfits in honor of Disney’s Lunar New Year from now through February 9 at their meet and greet location in Paradise Gardens Park at Disney California Adventure. Mickey and Minnie can also be found wearing these outfits designed by Gua Pei at Shanghai Disneyland from Lunar New Year through the Lantern Festival (January 25 through February 8). You can also find them wearing these gorgeous outfits on Mickey Avenue in Shangai Disneyland.
