Heads up, Matterhorn mountaineers and fans of Disneyland’s classic attractions! Your favorite historic coaster has is officially back up and fully running once again.
Disneyland officials made the decision to close one of the two Matterhorn Bobsleds attraction tracks after a bedroom-door-sized chunk of rockwork fell from the attraction’s mountainside exterior earlier this year in August. The rockwork broke loose during overnight maintenance and although nobody was hurt when the incident occurred, it did force the attraction to close.
One side of the attraction has been undergoing refurbishment ever since the rockwork incident, with only one of the two tracks operating at a given time while the mountain was being repaired. Disneyland even announced earlier this season that the attraction would only be operating on weekends for a couple of weeks so that refurbishments could be made.
But now, everything seems to be back to normal, and the fan-favorite classic Disneyland attraction — which celebrated its 60th anniversary this year — is back up and fully running. As of today, both of the Matterhorn Bobsleds tracks, one of which runs facing Fantasyland and the other facing Tomorrowland, are operating simultaneously, just as they did before the refurbishment.
As fans of Disneyland Resort and the attractions that Walt Disney himself was able to see brought to life, we are definitely happy to see that the Matterhorn Bobsleds are running to their fullest potential once again. This attraction has been around since 1959, and although it has undergone its fair share of refurbishments and upgrades, it still gives us that same feeling of nostalgia every time we have the opportunity to experience it.
Themed after the famous Swiss mountain of the same name, the Matterhorn is one of the Disneyland attractions that was around back when Walt Disney himself oversaw the southern California theme park — the very first Disney park in the world. It was also the first roller coaster-type attraction at Disneyland and the first tubular steel track coaster in the world. The ride vehicles and abominable snowman with the snow cavern have since been refurbished, but the Matterhorn still boasts the same thrilling adventure and immersive theme its had since opening. And if you’re anything like us, you love this attraction not only for its history but also for the fun and thrills it brings every experience.
