A new California law banning hotels — including hotels on Disneyland Resort property and in the surrounding area — from providing small plastic bottles to guests goes into effect in 2023.
The law bans hotels from providing guests with small plastic toiletry bottles, which frequent travelers will recognize as the bottles that commonly hold shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and other products that hotels often provide to guests. These bottles typically hold only a small amount of product — three fluid ounces or less — and guests often have to request several bottles of product to be delivered to their hotel rooms if they are staying for more than a couple of nights or if they are traveling in larger groups.

This new law goes into effect in 2023 for California hotels with more than 50 rooms — such as the Disneyland Hotel, Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, and Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel, all located on Disney property in Anaheim. In 2024, hotels with less than 50 rooms will be affected. Hotels that violate this new law will be fined $500 for the first offense and $2,000 thereafter.
This law follows The Walt Disney Company’s 2018 announcement that it would be eliminating small plastic toiletry bottles from the Disney Resort hotels and Disney Cruise Line ships. Disney has slowly been phasing out these bottles by installing larger shampoo, conditioner, and body wash dispensers in the showers of select Walt Disney World Resort hotels and on the Disney Cruise Line ships.

California has also been continuing to try to reduce plastic waste, and the Disney Parks both in California and in Florida have been adapting to this new mentality. Guests at Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort can purchase reusable bags for an inexpensive price when shopping at merchandise locations all throughout the Disney Parks. And both the west coast and the east coast Disney Resorts offer paper straws instead of plastic in order to reduce plastic usage.

If you’re the type of traveler who loves to take home the small toiletry bottles from Disney Resort hotels, just keep in mind that you probably won’t see them on your next vacation. But if you’re a fan of the H2O products that are provided at Disneyland hotels, Walt Disney World hotels, and on Disney Cruise Line staterooms, you can find them online on shopDisney to bring the magic of Disney home with you.
