New U.S. patents filed recently by Universal Orlando Resort have the theme park community abuzz over what they might represent. Despite potential initial disappointment over what appears to be another screen-heavy projection-based ride, there is much more to it than first meets the eye.

At the very least, this ride appears to incorporate actual forward motion along with a track system through a series of tunnels, as opposed to a movement simulator anchored in front of one screen.

Speculation abounds that the images most likely depict an upcoming Super Mario Kart ride for the previously-announced Nintendo World, based on the shapes of the pathways and the “pipe” iconography. Another possibility is Universal Orlando’s port of the Fast & Furious: Supercharged attraction from Universal Studios Hollywood, for which the style of the car seen here would make more sense.
