Disney unveils Haunted Mansion mystery box subscription complete with interactive at-home experience

We have previously seen Disney playing around with the subscription box trend with the Disney Park Pack Pin Trading Edition box and their Tsum Tsum box subscription.

With Disney being such a large company in charge of so many different IPs it’s quite surprising that they haven’t taken their subscription box game a bit further. But this morning’s release of the Haunted Mansion themed “Ghost Post” subscription may be just that as it is a game changer for Disney as they enter the “mystery box” market. On the official website for the subscription box you find out that the makers of this quest are WDI R&D, the same storytellers that was responsible for the game “The Optimist” that created buzz for the movie Tomorrowland.

9668055940373-3The Ghost Post subscription box is something quite new for Disney, in which they’re trying to take regular merchandise and make it more than just a static collectible. This box will not only supply you with some cool collectibles, but it will also interact with your iPhone to figure out the secrets of the Haunted Mansion. With this subscription box you are actually being sent on a quest, a kind of scavenger hunt, to find out more details from the ghoulish residents of the Mansion.

This blend of merchandise, online gaming and scavenger hunt is a new way for Disney to involve their customers in an immersive, interactive experience. You could almost liken it to the interactive “Sorcerer of the Magic Kingdom” game at Walt Disney World, but this time Disney is offering up the experience to everyone at home too. This unique combination of merchandise and immersive gaming is definitely adding something “more” to the regular subscription box service and if this is a successful venture for Disney there will certainly be much more to come.

So what do you receive with your “Ghost Host” subscription? Here is what we know:

  1. Beginning at the end of March 2016, the Ghost Relations Department will send you three “scare packages.” You will receive one box per month, for three months.
  2. Each box includes 7-9 objects designed specifically for the Ghost Post, and each item will have certain hidden qualities and secrets for you to discover, and each one will become a prop in your experience – revealing a little bit more of the story.
  3. The Ghost Post experience requires an iPhone 5s or newer model. The Ghost Relations department has developed a marvelous Phantom Radio iPhone App. The app makes your iPhone particularly sensitive to the haunted artifacts you will receive in your subscription. Using the app, you can unlock new aspects of your objects and connect with the ghosts of the Haunted Mansion.

After you receive your packages it is up to you, the player, to piece all the information together. A website has also been launched where you can receive even more clues from the inhabitants of the Haunted Mansion.

“I was sure the Ghost Relations Department would do whatever they could to keep us from following home the humans they bring to visit us. But they are thrilled to do whatever they can to help us hitchhike out with the guests for some good old-fashioned home haunting. And then they’re there to help us get back, and welcome us with open arms. At least it used to be that way, before the recent…troubles. But I have confidence that the Ghost Relations Department will be able to find some fore friendly humans to help us fix things up. ” – Happy Haunt Gus

I would love to buy this, but it looks like it’s not compatible with my phone (iPhone 5). On the purchase page it says:
    “Supported models: iPhone 5S, 6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6S Plus”

When will Disney wake up and realize they will get many more sales if they include Android phones? There are more than twice as many Android users in the US than there are iPhone users.

Android phones are so varied it wouldn’t be worth Disney’s time to make this. Apple’s form factor is a known quantity. There are so many variations to the Android phone lines that they couldn’t feasibly include everybody.

I second that. As a long time Android owner, I would gladly buy this. Even if they concentrated on Galaxy phones, Disney could probably get their development money back.

    Already sold out.

Gonna have to do more than 999 methinks.

Despite my trying to talk myself out of this (do you really need to spend $199 right now?) I caved. I’m so excited to be able to follow along because The Haunted Mansion is one of my favorite rides at Disneyland 🙂

I also have an Android phone. I was there the year Disney World opened, and this was my favorite ride. It is still very much a favorite, and it broke my heart that I couldn’t be included in this.

Don’t worry about missing out on Android. Tried to download the on my iPhone 6 but apparently the app isn’t available in the U.S. store. That’s a waste of $199. Let’s see if I can get a refund. Anyone see the same thing? 🙁

I got rid of other app! This has way better themes and I can also customize my unlock wallpaper, tho only a few and they can’t. I can set a different theme for different apps I want locked, & in different mode so I wont have to worry about letting someone use my phone & be snooping in my apps or pics! Great job developers! ???
