Guests aren’t simply visiting a place filled with Toy Story characters. They’re supposed to shrink to the size of a toy and step directly into Andy’s backyard.
Slinky Dog Dash is something Andy built. Christmas lights tower over guests because they’re toy-sized. Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Jessie, and the Green Army Men are all part of Andy’s collection.
Disney took that storyline seriously enough that it influenced what Imagineers could — and could not — put inside the land.
Now, Disney is making a change that appears to break its own rules.
Beginning September 25, Lilypad from Toy Story 5 (2026) will take over Alien Swirling Saucers as its new DJ, bringing a new soundtrack and updated theming to the attraction.
It may sound like a relatively small ride update.
For Toy Story Land, however, it changes something much bigger.
Disney Is Bringing Toy Story 5 (2026) Into Andy’s Backyard
Disney opened the 11-acre Toy Story Land on June 30, 2018, after announcing it at D23 Expo three years earlier.
From the beginning, Disney designed the land around the idea that guests had shrunk to toy size inside Andy’s backyard. Slinky Dog Dash and Alien Swirling Saucers opened alongside a relocated entrance for Toy Story Mania!, while Woody’s Lunch Box gave the land its first dining location.
That premise explains much of what guests see.
The oversized toys, blocks, game pieces, fences, lights, and other objects aren’t simply decorations. They establish the scale and tell guests where they supposedly are.
More importantly, the toys are supposed to belong in Andy’s world.
That creates an immediate problem with Lilypad.
The character comes from Toy Story 5 (2026), while Toy Story Land exists within a version of Andy’s childhood that predates the character by decades.
As far as Disney has publicly established, Lilypad wasn’t one of Andy’s toys.
And considering the era in which Andy grew up, it would be difficult to explain how he ended up with one.
Until now, Disney didn’t really have to answer that question.
Starting September 25, it does.
Lilypad Is Taking Over Alien Swirling Saucers
Disney isn’t merely slipping a small Lilypad Easter egg somewhere into the land.
The character is becoming part of an existing attraction.
Lilypad will serve as the DJ for Alien Swirling Saucers, with “Lilypad’s Jams” providing a rotating collection of music. The soundtrack includes remixed Toy Story songs along with new music spanning pop, country, EDM, and alt-rock.
Walt Disney Imagineering has also revealed that the attraction’s entrance will receive a Lilypad’s Jams overlay.
That makes this harder to dismiss as background entertainment.
Lilypad now exists within the physical story of Toy Story Land.
And that raises a much larger question: Is Toy Story Land still Andy’s backyard?
Disney Previously Used the Story to Limit What Could Go Here
This is where the change becomes especially interesting.
For years, one of the most common complaints about Toy Story Land involved Pizza Planet.
On the surface, Pizza Planet seems like an obvious fit. It is one of the most recognizable locations from the original Toy Story (1995), and Disney previously operated a Pizza Planet-themed restaurant elsewhere at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
But Toy Story Land wasn’t designed as a general collection of locations and characters from the franchise.
It was Andy’s backyard.
That distinction mattered.
The idea was that guests had shrunk to the size of Andy’s toys and were surrounded by things he owned or created. A full-sized Pizza Planet restaurant wouldn’t naturally fit that premise because guests weren’t supposed to be standing inside the actual Pizza Planet from the movie.
Disney worked within those storytelling limitations when developing the land.
Now, Lilypad creates essentially the opposite situation.
Rather than protecting the original timeline and setting, Disney is bringing a character from Toy Story 5 (2026) directly into an attraction that exists inside Andy’s childhood backyard.
You can’t really have it both ways.
The Original Toy Story Land Story May Effectively Be Over
Disney has not announced that Toy Story Land is receiving a complete retheme.
Slinky Dog Dash isn’t changing. Woody’s Lunch Box isn’t disappearing. The giant Woody figure at the entrance isn’t being removed. Roundup Rodeo BBQ is still there.
But thematically, something important is changing.
Toy Story Land can either remain locked within Andy’s childhood, or it can become a broader Toy Story franchise land where characters, technology, and ideas from different periods coexist.
Adding Lilypad strongly points toward the second option.
That doesn’t necessarily make the new version worse. Some guests may prefer Disney having more freedom to update Toy Story Land whenever Pixar releases another movie.
It could keep the land from becoming frozen in 2018 forever.
But Disney would be loosening one of the central storytelling rules Imagineers originally established.
Even fans immediately noticed the contradiction. One response questioned how Lilypad could possibly belong in Andy’s backyard when he was a child in a completely different era.
That’s a fair question because Disney itself made Andy’s timeline important.
Alien Swirling Saucers Is Becoming Something Different
There is also a more straightforward attraction change happening here.
Alien Swirling Saucers has largely remained the same since Toy Story Land opened in 2018. That makes the September 25 update one of the ride’s biggest changes in eight years.
Disney appears to be borrowing at least part of the formula used by The Happy Ride with Baymax at Tokyo Disneyland. That attraction uses a similar ride system paired with multiple songs, turning the music and dancing around the attraction into part of the experience.
Lilypad’s Jams could give Alien Swirling Saucers that same energy.
From a pure attraction standpoint, adding rotating music could make repeat rides more interesting.
The bigger consequence comes from what Disney has to sacrifice to make it happen.
Is Toy Story Land Becoming a General Toy Story Land?
That may ultimately be where Disney is heading.
When Toy Story Land opened, its name was broader than its actual story. Guests weren’t entering every corner of the Toy Story universe. They were entering Andy’s backyard.
Eight years later, that distinction may be fading.
Lilypad provides Disney with a way to connect the land directly to Toy Story 5 (2026). The timing makes that connection particularly clear: the updated Alien Swirling Saucers experience debuts September 25, just two days after the movie’s September 23 Disney+ arrival.
If Disney is willing to bend the timeline for Lilypad, it also opens the door to other additions that previously wouldn’t have worked within Andy’s backyard.
Future Toy Story characters wouldn’t necessarily need an explanation for why Andy owned them. New attractions wouldn’t have to fit as neatly into his childhood. Even concepts once considered incompatible with the backyard setting become easier to imagine.
In other words, Disney may not be replacing Toy Story Land physically.
It’s replacing the original rulebook.
For eight years, everything inside the land needed to make sense because guests were toys in Andy’s backyard.
On September 25, a character from Toy Story 5 (2026) will apparently be waiting there, too.
And once Disney crosses that line, the original explanation for what Toy Story Land is becomes much harder to maintain.
