‘Harry Potter’ World Exiting Universal, Officially Moving out of North America
Harry Potter is officially breaking out of Universal’s theme-park network. Miral and Warner Bros. Discovery Global Experiences have confirmed three Harry Potter lands at Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi on Yas Island: Diagon Alley, Hogwarts, and the Forbidden Forest. Construction is targeted for completion in 2029, although an official opening date has not been announced.
That distinction matters. Harry Potter has expanded across Universal parks in Orlando, Hollywood, Osaka, and Beijing, but the Abu Dhabi project is set to become the franchise’s first permanent, large-scale theme-park destination outside Universal’s resort network. For fans, Warner Bros. is no longer leaving Universal as the only theme-park operator building permanent Wizarding World lands.
Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi Confirms Three Harry Potter Lands
The September 7 announcement substantially sharpens a project first revealed in 2022. At that time, Warner Bros. Discovery and Miral described one extensive Harry Potter-themed land. The companies now say the development will comprise three lands spanning approximately 63,000 square meters, or 678,000 square feet.
Diagon Alley will recreate the wizarding shopping district, Hogwarts will center on the famous school and castle, and the Forbidden Forest will turn the creature-filled woodland into its own themed environment.
Inside the Magic previously covered the three-land Abu Dhabi expansion as the scope became official. Miral says the Harry Potter project, together with the previously announced Kryptonite Collider and Superman Up and Away DC attractions, will add roughly 70,000 square meters of theme-park space and increase Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi’s overall size by more than 50%.
Harry Potter’s Universal-Only Theme Park Era Is Ending
This is not the first Wizarding World outside Universal Orlando Resort. Universal Studios Japan opened its version in 2014, Universal Studios Hollywood followed in 2016, and Universal Beijing Resort later joined the lineup. Inside the Magic has tracked how Universal’s Harry Potter attractions expanded internationally, including changes to Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey in Japan.
What makes Abu Dhabi different is the operator. The original 2022 announcement explicitly said the Warner Bros. World project would exist “together with” Harry Potter lands at Universal Parks. Inside the Magic also noted years ago that Universal did not hold completely exclusive theme-park rights, with Abu Dhabi already serving as evidence.
That means calling this a breakup between Warner Bros. and Universal would go beyond the evidence. Universal still operates established Wizarding World lands, and neither company has announced that those attractions are closing or losing Harry Potter. What is changing is the competitive landscape: a non-Universal theme park is now getting a permanent Harry Potter development of its own.
Abu Dhabi Is Getting Attractions Universal Guests Won’t Have
The clearest competitive wrinkle is not Hogwarts or Diagon Alley themselves. It is the rides.
According to the Abu Dhabi Media Office announcement, the three lands will feature “world-exclusive” Harry Potter-themed rides created specifically for Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi. The park’s official FAQ repeats that point while withholding attraction names and further ride details.
That gives the Yas Island project something more consequential than another recreation of familiar scenery. Universal Orlando currently spreads its Wizarding World across Hogsmeade at Islands of Adventure, Diagon Alley at Universal Studios Florida, and the Ministry of Magic at Epic Universe. Inside the Magic covered the opening-era Ministry of Magic attraction, Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry, as Universal continued investing heavily in the property.
For American fans, however, no comparable Warner Bros.-operated Harry Potter theme-park expansion has been announced in the United States. The newly confirmed exclusive rides are, for now, tied to Abu Dhabi.
Universal Orlando Still Has a Major Harry Potter Advantage
Universal Orlando’s position remains formidable. Its official resort site currently promotes three Wizarding World experiences across three theme parks: Hogsmeade, Diagon Alley, and the Ministry of Magic. That network includes Epic Universe’s newest Harry Potter investment.
Demand has also remained part of the story. Inside the Magic reported extreme waits for Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry after Epic Universe opened, underscoring the draw of the franchise even as Warner Bros. prepares a competing destination overseas.
So the more accurate industry takeaway is not that Warner Bros. has stripped Universal of Harry Potter. Abu Dhabi instead demonstrates that Universal does not have the entire theme-park category to itself. By 2029, if the construction target is met, travelers could have a major non-Universal alternative built around three familiar settings and rides unavailable at Universal’s parks.
What Happens Next for the Abu Dhabi Wizarding World
Several questions remain unanswered. Miral and Warner Bros. Discovery have not announced the ride names, attraction lineup, restaurants, shops, operating model for the individual lands, or an official public opening date. The 2029 date is a construction-completion target, not a confirmed opening day.
That makes the next round of announcements important. Warner Bros. World is inviting fans to register for updates, while construction moves forward on Yas Island.
For Universal fans, the project is worth watching for a simple reason: Harry Potter’s permanent theme-park future is no longer being developed solely inside Universal-branded gates. The next test will be whether Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi’s three-land expansion can turn that new competitive reality into a Wizarding World experience distinct enough to justify an international trip.
