The ride’s opening scene has drawn criticism in recent years from those who believe the depiction of suicide may be triggering for some Disney Park guests.
A Tumultuous Time for Haunted Mansion Fans
On July 24, Magic Kingdom Park guests arrived to find that the hanging corpse was no longer visible in one of the Stretching Room pre-show areas in the Haunted Mansion. At first, Disney Parks fans assumed that Walt Disney World Resort had quietly catered to those who asked that the suicide scene be removed from the Liberty Square attraction. The update came amid a multi-month exterior refurbishment of the Haunted Mansion, lending more credence to the theory that Disney had also decided to refresh the interior of the 54-year-old ride.
As with most changes at the Disney parks, there was immediate uproar about the change to the Haunted Mansion. So much so, in fact, that Walt Disney World Resort spoke out within 24 hours, explaining that the corpse had not been removed. Instead, the scrim that conceals it from guests during most of the left Stretching Room scene had become so dirty (possibly with debris from ongoing construction) that the hanging doll was no longer visible.
By July 27, Walt Disney World Resort had cleaned the scrim, and the hanging corpse was visible again. Most Disney Parks fans assumed that was the last guests would hear about the controversial Stretching Room prop. That changed on August 5.
Disney World Updates Hanging Corpse Scene in the Haunted Mansion…Again
On Wednesday, WDWNT reported that Walt Disney World Resort had once again updated the affected Stretching Room in the Haunted Mansion. Just over a week after cleaning the scrim, Disney made the surprising decision to replace it entirely.
Even after being cleaned, the scrim still showed some staining from years of dust and debris. The new scrim has shading around the triangular ceiling patterns to match the Haunted Mansion’s overall aged aesthetic, but shows no obvious signs of real wear and tear.
The lighting in the left Stretching Room has also been adjusted, making the hanging corpse even more visible as it swings above Magic Kingdom Park guests.
The scrim in the right Stretching Room, which never became dirty enough to conceal the doll, has not been replaced.
Is This Really the End?
It’s not just Disney Parks fans who have theorized about the removal of the hanging corpse from the Haunted Mansion. The Walt Disney Company has spent years making cultural sensitivity updates to its theme parks and entertainment properties, putting warnings ahead of older films with offensive stereotypes on Disney+, replacing the Song of the South (1946)-themed Splash Mountain with Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, and updating the depiction of Native Americans on Peter Pan’s Flight with input from cultural experts and community activists.
In 2021, during a refurbishment of the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland Resort, Walt Disney Imagineer Michele Hobbs said that her team had considered removing the hanging corpse from the Stretching Room.
“It’s been discussed for sure,” she said. “It’s definitely something that we’re thinking about.”
Another Imagineer, Kim Irvine, responded to a similar question during another refurbishment of the Disneyland Park attraction in 2024: “We’re still looking at that. That one is complicated, structurally … One thing at a time.”
In recent years, insider reports have claimed that Disney is no longer considering removing the suicide scene from the Stretching Room of the Haunted Mansion. Walt Disney World Resort’s recent refresh of the scene appears to confirm that the hanging corpse isn’t going anywhere–at least for now.
