Guests planning a Walt Disney World vacation this September may want to take a closer look at Disney’s latest operating schedule. On the surface, it appears to be a simple calendar adjustment. In reality, it could help reduce crowds and wait times in two different parks on the same night.

Disney has shifted one of its September Extended Evening Hours events from Magic Kingdom to Disney’s Hollywood Studios. While eligible resort guests gain two extra hours inside Hollywood Studios, the change could also improve the experience at Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party by reducing the number of Deluxe Resort guests remaining in Magic Kingdom after regular park closing.
The result is a rare win for two very different groups of visitors. Hollywood Studios guests may enjoy shorter attraction waits, while Halloween Party attendees could find lighter crowds throughout Magic Kingdom. If Disney’s strategy works as intended, guests in both parks could benefit from shorter lines and a more comfortable evening experience.
Disney Is Adjusting Extended Evening Hours
Extended Evening Hours remain one of the most valuable perks available to guests staying at Deluxe Disney Resort hotels and other select qualifying resorts. After the park officially closes, eligible visitors can remain inside for two additional hours with access to many of the park’s headline attractions.

Normally, Magic Kingdom hosts Extended Evening Hours several times each month. However, Disney has confirmed that on September 16, the perk will instead move to Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Eligible guests will be able to enjoy the park from 9:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m.
The timing is no coincidence.
September falls right in the middle of Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party season, which takes place on select nights from early August through Halloween. Because Magic Kingdom closes early for the separately ticketed event, Disney must balance attendance across its parks while continuing to offer one of its most popular hotel benefits.
Rather than squeezing Extended Evening Hours into a park already hosting thousands of Halloween Party guests, Disney is sending eligible visitors to Hollywood Studios for one evening instead.
Disney May Be Solving Two Crowd Problems at Once
Although Disney hasn’t officially said the schedule change is intended to reduce crowds, the timing strongly suggests it serves exactly that purpose.
Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is one of Walt Disney World’s busiest seasonal events. Thousands of guests begin entering Magic Kingdom as early as 4:00 p.m. before the party officially starts later that evening. Those visitors mix with regular daytime guests until park closing.

If Disney also hosted Extended Evening Hours at Magic Kingdom that night, another group of Deluxe Resort guests would remain inside the park for two additional hours. That would leave three different groups sharing many of the same attractions, walkways, restaurants, and entertainment offerings.
By relocating Extended Evening Hours to Hollywood Studios, Disney spreads those crowds between two parks instead of concentrating everyone inside Magic Kingdom.
That could translate into shorter waits for Halloween Party attractions, less congestion around trick-or-treat trails, more room along parade viewing areas, and an overall smoother experience throughout the event. While the party will still be busy, removing even a portion of eligible hotel guests from Magic Kingdom should help improve crowd flow.
Hollywood Studios Could Become the Better Evening Choice
The benefits aren’t limited to Halloween Party guests.
Hollywood Studios is home to several of Walt Disney World’s most popular attractions, and many regularly post waits exceeding an hour during the day. That’s especially true for rides in Toy Story Land and Sunset Boulevard.
During Extended Evening Hours, however, attendance drops significantly because only eligible Deluxe Resort guests remain inside the park after official closing.

Disney currently plans to offer access to:
- Alien Swirling Saucers
- Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway
- Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run
- Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring the Muppets
- Slinky Dog Dash
- Star Tours – The Adventures Continue
- The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror
- Toy Story Mania!
Instead of spending much of the evening waiting in standby lines, guests often have the opportunity to experience multiple major attractions in just two hours.
With Disney funneling Extended Evening Hours guests into Hollywood Studios rather than Magic Kingdom, the park should remain relatively uncrowded compared to a normal operating day. Attractions that can exceed 60, 90, or even 120 minutes during peak hours often see dramatically shorter waits late in the evening.
For eligible resort guests, that means a better chance to ride headline attractions with minimal delays while enjoying a noticeably more relaxed atmosphere throughout the park.
Not Every Guest Will Benefit
Of course, the schedule change won’t affect every Disney visitor equally.
Extended Evening Hours remain exclusive to guests staying at Deluxe Disney Resort hotels, Deluxe Villas, and a limited number of participating hotels. Most Walt Disney World visitors will still leave Hollywood Studios when the park closes to regular guests.
Meanwhile, visitors who originally planned on late-night access to Magic Kingdom on September 16 will need to adjust their plans if they want to take advantage of the perk.

Instead of remaining in Magic Kingdom, eligible guests will need to travel to Hollywood Studios.
For travelers who build detailed itineraries around Lightning Lane reservations, dining plans, and nighttime entertainment, that may require reshuffling part of their vacation schedule.
Fortunately, guests staying at Disney’s Beach Club Resort, Disney’s Yacht Club Resort, Disney’s BoardWalk Inn, Disney’s Swan, or Disney’s Dolphin will have relatively easy access to Hollywood Studios thanks to the nearby walking path and Friendship Boats.
Others may simply need to budget additional travel time using Disney transportation.
A Schedule Change That Benefits More Than One Park
Disney frequently adjusts park operations during seasonal events, but this change appears designed to improve the guest experience across multiple parks instead of just one.
Halloween Party guests could enjoy lighter crowds and shorter waits because fewer Deluxe Resort guests will remain inside Magic Kingdom after regular operating hours. At the same time, eligible hotel guests receive one of the best opportunities of the month to experience Hollywood Studios with reduced wait times and lighter crowds than they would normally encounter.
Rather than creating another busy evening at Magic Kingdom, Disney is spreading attendance across two parks and making better use of one of its most valuable on-site hotel perks.
If the strategy works as intended, September 16 could become one of the best nights of the Halloween season regardless of which park guests choose. Halloween Party attendees may notice a smoother experience with less congestion throughout Magic Kingdom, while Deluxe Resort guests could enjoy some of the shortest attraction waits they’ll find all day at Hollywood Studios.
Instead of simply moving Extended Evening Hours to another park, Disney may have found a way to improve the evening experience for guests on both sides of Walt Disney World.
