Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026) is just a few weeks from swinging into theaters.

In the film, Tom Holland reprises his role as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, having now played the character since his appearance in Captain America: Civil War (2016). While he also appeared in two other Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) crossovers (2018’s Avengers: Infinity War and 2019’s Avengers: Endgame), Brand New Day is his fourth solo outing as the iconic webslinger.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and written by Chris McKenna, Erik Sommers, and Justin Kuritzkes, Brand New Day is the fourth film in the MCU’s Spider-Man series, following Homecoming (2017), Far From Home (2019), and No Way Home (2021).

A Recap of Events in No Way Home

Brand New Day follows the events of No Way Home, which ended with Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) conjuring a spell that made the world forget who Peter Parker (Holland) was, including his girlfriend MJ Watson (Zendaya) and best friend Ned Leeds (Jacob Batalon).

This came after Strange tampered with reality in an attempt to reverse Peter’s outing as Spider-Man to the world; however, that spell went awry, causing several villains from other Spider-Man eras in film, including Jamie Foxx’s Matt Dillon/Electro, Alfred Molina’s Otto Octavius/Doctor Octopus, and Willem Dafoe’s Norman Osborn/Green Goblin, to enter their world. Holland’s Spidey was eventually joined by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s versions of the webslinger.

What Will Spider-Man: Brand New Day Be About?

With Great Power, Comes Great Change

The latest film, which releases in theaters on July 31, finds Peter Parker trying to adjust to his new, quiet life as the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, fighting crime all over New York while having to deal with seeing his old friends—and the whole world—move on without him. But he soon realizes that he’s undergoing a mysterious transformation connected to his spider powers.

Here’s the official synopsis from Marvel:

It’s a BRAND NEW DAY for Peter Parker. Fighting crime full-time as Spider-Man in a world that doesn’t remember him—and the pressure of seeing his old friends move on without him—sparks a change in Peter he may not have the power to control. But that transformation might also be the only thing that can stop a shocking new threat to the city and those he loves—a powerful villain no one can even see.

Tom Holland Will Pass the Torch

While Tom Holland has no plans to hang up the suit anytime soon, with the 30-year-old actor having previously stated, “I’ll do it for as long as they’ll have me,” and with Brand New Day confirmed by Sony and Marvel Studios producers to be the first in a new trilogy, a future film may see Holland pass the mantle to another actor, which is something he’s also said he’d like to do. We have no idea who the actor will be, but as for the character, it will likely be Miles Morales.

Miles Morales is another Spider-Man, created in 2011 by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Sara Pichelli, with editorial support from Marvel’s then editor-in-chief, Axel Alonso. The character first appeared that same year in Ultimate Comics: Fallout #4. He’s the teenage son of an African-American father and an Afro-Puerto Rican mother.

Now, Holland has said that he wants to help bring the character will into the MCU.

In a recent interview with Hobby Consolas (via IGN), the Odyssey actor talked about his “aspirations” for a post-Brand New Day Spider-Man era. And when asked about how his version of the iconic wall-crawler could mentor another at some point in the future, he said he’s already doing his bit to bring Miles Morales into the MCU and hopes that it could happen someday.

“I think at this point in time, we’re being really open-minded about what the future looks like. I know that I have aspirations to bring Miles Morales into the universe, however that works out. You know, we’ve got a lot of work to do to bring that to life.”

When Will Miles Morales Be in the MCU?

Miles has yet to appear in the MCU — although there have been a few references to his character. There’s a cameo appearance from his uncle, Aaron Davis (Donald Glover), in Spider-Man: Homecoming, who mentions having a nephew, and in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Max Dillon (Jamie Foxx) jokingly tells Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker after he unmasks himself, “I just thought you were going to be Black. There’s got to be a Black Spider-Man somewhere out there.”

Miles Morales’ Main Spider-Man Appearances

Miles has, however, appeared in the animated films, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023), and will return in next year’s threequel Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse (2027). He’s voiced by Shameik Moore in the series. Throughout those films, Peter Parker (Jake Johnson) of Earth-616B serves as a mentor to Miles.

Similarly, Miles prominently appears throughout Insomniac’s games, first in Marvel’s Spider-Man (2018), before getting his own spinoff with Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales (2020), and then co-leading in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 (2023). Throughout that series, teenager Miles is also the protégé of an older version of Peter.

A future film starring Holland’s Peter/Spidey and Miles Morales could follow a similar arc. But while New York’s second Spidey will undoubtedly appear in the MCU somewhere down the line, Brand New Day already has a fairly packed character lineup, so he’s unlikely to show up.

Along with Spidey and his pals and several newcomers, it also features Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle/Punisher and Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk. Sadie Sink (Stranger Things) also appears in an undisclosed role, which many believe to be Jean Grey from the X-Men universe.

Could Miles Morales Appear in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe?

Whether Miles Morales could appear in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe remains to be seen. Although it’s possible now that the MCU-adjacent, shared cinematic universe is being reset.

Earlier this year, Sony chairman and CEO Tom Rothman confirmed that the SSU will be rebooted. During an appearance on The Town podcast (via The Hollywood Reporter), he was asked, “Where are we in the Spider-Man franchise? Not the animated Spider-Verse. Is the larger Spider-Verse dead?,” to which he replied that it’s getting a “fresh reboot” with “new people.”

The SSU includes Venom (2018), Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021), Morbius (2022), Venom: The Last Dance (2024), Madame Web (2024), and Kraven the Hunter (2024), with all but the Venom films (which were each critically panned) proving to be massive cinematic flops.

Fans were also disappointed with the fact that Spidey didn’t even appear in any of the films.

For now, all eyes are on Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which arrives in theatres July 31.

The film stars Tom Holland as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Zendaya as Michelle “MJ” Jones-Watson, Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds, Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle/Punisher, Tramell Tillman as Bill Metzger, Michael Mando as Mac Gargan/Scorpion, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk, and Sadie Sink.

For fans who can’t wait to see Miles Morales swing into action, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is scheduled for release on June 18, 2027.
