These days, it’s not unusual to have more than one version of Batman in play in film.

Just over a year after Matt Reeves launched The Batman starring Robert Pattinson in 2022, the DC Extended Universe film The Flash gave us not one, but two different Dark Knights, in Ben Affleck’s hulking portrayal as seen in previous DCEU entries and Michael Keaton’s iteration from the two Tim Burton films (the film also featured George Clooney’s Bruce Wayne, so that’s three).

Now, The Batman – Part II is scheduled for release in October, 2027, while a new film titled The Brave and the Bold is also in development. That project will introduce yet another new version of the Caped Crusader, joining Superman (2025) and the upcoming films Supergirl (2026) and Clayface (2026) in the newly established DC Universe under James Gunn and Peter Safran.

But there’s a third Dark Knight film in the works, and it’s coming this year: Batman: Knightfall.

Last year, following an official announcement at New York Comic-Con 2025, Variety reported that Batman: Knightfall would be getting a multi-part, animated film series based on the comic.

That comic was released in three parts between 1993 and 1994, across three chapters: Knightfall, Knightquest, and KnightsEnd. The adaptation is expected to adapt all three stories, which would make it the second Batman trilogy after Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight films.

Warner Bros. Animation, DC Studios, and Warner Home Entertainment are set to host a special screening of the first film in the series during France’s Annecy Animation Festival this week.

What Is Batman: Knightfall?

Batman: Knightfall adapts the comic book story of the same name best known for introducing the villain Bane and the moment where he physically and mentally breaks Batman, as depicted in Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises (2012), which starred Christian Bale and Tom Hardy in those roles.

DC’s synopsis for Knightfall reads:

“When the mysterious behemoth known only as Bane frees Batman’s entire Rogues’ Gallery from Arkham Asylum, the Caped Crusader is pushed to his mental and physical breaking point.”

Now, the first teaser for Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall has arrived, as shared in a post on X (formerly Twitter) by Warner Bros. Entertainment yesterday, June 22, which included some official artwork and the tagline: “Every man has his breaking point.”

The post also tells us that the first official trailer for the film is expected to drop today, June 23.

Per Comicbookmovie.com, it has also been confirmed that Batman: Knightfall Part 1 is R rated.

The film is being directed by Jeff Wamester, known for his work on DC’s animated Tomorrowverse projects, including the Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths trilogy, and written by Jeremy Adams. Rick Morales serves as supervising producer on the films, alongside producers Jim Krieg and Kimberly S. Moreau. Sam Register and Michael Uslan are on board as executive producers.

The voice cast for the film has not been announced yet.
