Amazon MGM Studios is developing a new James Bond film separate from the Daniel Craig series, which ended with No Time to Die (2021). The reboot is being directed by Denis Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049, Dune, Dune: Part Two) and written by Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders).

Recently, the studio confirmed that the hunt for the new Bond has begun, with casting director Nina Gold reportedly leading the search.

Meanwhile, several existing iterations of the iconic MI6 spy have returned in new follow-ups.

A New Wave of 007 Adventures

Since his debut in Ian Fleming’s novel Casino Royale in 1953, Bond has been reimagined numerous times across media, most notably in film and literature. Aside from the film series, which so far has 26 entries to its name, the character has enjoyed many more outings in print.

Now, a new wave of novels, each with their own separate continuity, is being rolled out; some of them already on shelves, others coming very soon.

Firstly, there’s Kim Sherwood’s Hurricane Room, the third entry in her Double O trilogy, which launched with Double or Nothing and continued with A Spy Like Me. The latest installment is now available.

Vaseem Khan’s The Man with the Golden Compass, the second book in The Q Mysteries series following Quantum of Menace, is releasing this October. The series centers on the character Q, though Bond makes guest appearances throughout.

Earlier this year, a new book in Charlie Higson’s series was announced. While King Zero features an adult 007, it takes place within the same continuity as his Young Bond novels, SilverFinBlood FeverDouble or DieHurricane Gold, and By Royal Command. King Zero will be released this September.

Last but not least, M. W. Craven’s James Bond and the Secret Agent Academy, which sees a new version of 007 training young MI6 recruits, is expected to hit shelves later this month.

Will Any James Bond Actors Return?

There are no plans for any Bond actors to return in a future film. The most difficult comeback would be Daniel Craig, as his version of the character was killed off in No Time to Die.

Who’s Next to Play 007?

While we wait to find out who’s next to play Bond on the big screen, a new actor has already been cast as the character in IO Interactive’s new third-person action-adventure game 007 First Light.

It introduces a new, younger version of Bond played by Irish actor Patrick Gibson, previously best known as the young Dexter Morgan in the Paramount+ series Dexter: Original Sin (2024).

Speculation about a sequel to 007 First Light began before launch. Now that it has sold nearly 3 million copies in its first two weeks, it’s expected to launch an entire series, most likely a trilogy. Although it remains to be seen whether Gibson will reprise his role as 007 in a future installment.

007 First Light is available now. There’s no release date for the James Bond film.
