Michael Crichton has become as synonymous with Jurassic Park (1993) as director Steven Spielberg. But despite a career filled with sci-fi “techno-thrillers,” including The Andromeda Strain (1969), Congo (1980), and Sphere (1987), the late author, screenwriter, and filmmaker will forever be best known for the best-selling novel Jurassic Park (1990) and its sequel, The Lost World (1995), along with their respective blockbusters films directed by Spielberg and produced by Universal Pictures.

Now, one of Crichton’s most iconic sci-fi thrillers is getting a remake.

Deadline has reported that a remake of the cult-classic 1973 film Westworld, written and directed by Crichton, is in development, with David Koepp attached as screenwriter.

Koepp worked on the screenplay for the original Jurassic Park and its sequel The Lost World, and most recently returned to pen the script for Jurassic World Rebirth (2025).

What Is Westworld?

Similar to Crichton’s 1990 novel, Jurassic Park, Westworld (1973) is a sci-fi thriller set in a theme park. But instead of genetically engineered dinosaurs in jungle enclosures, Westworld, a fantasy resort modeled after the Old West, is populated with lifelike robots.

In true Crichton fashion, things go awry and the guests soon find themselves going up against malfunctioning cowboy androids.

The film starred Yul Brynner, Richard Benjamin, and James Brolin. It was later adapted into a television series in 2016, which starred Ed Harris, Thandiwe Newton, Anthony Hopkins, and Jeffrey Wright. However, the remake is said to be going back to the original 1973 film.

The Success of Jurassic Park (1993)

Whether Crichton’s Jurassic Park will ever be rebooted remains to be seen. The original 1993 film became an instant classic and a landmark film after pioneering groundbreaking practical and digital special effects, courtesy of Stan Winston and Industrial Light & Magic, respectively, reshaping the future of cinema.

The film starred Sam Neill (Alan Grant), Laura Dern (Ellie Sattler), Jeff Goldblum (Ian Malcolm), Ariana Richards (Lex Murphy), Joe Mazzello (Tim Murphy), Richard Attenborough (John Hammond), Wayne Knight (Dennis Nedry), Martin Ferrero (Donald Gennaro), BD Wong (Henry Wu), Bob Peck (Robert Muldoon), and Samuel L. Jackson (Ray Arnold).

The Jurassic Park film series, which now has seven installments and a global multimedia franchise, has so far grossed just under $7 billion worldwide.

Rumors suggest that a new sequel is in development at Universal Pictures, with Rebirth director Gareth Edwards and star Scarlett Johansson reportedly in negotiations to return, however, the studio has yet to make an announcement.

There’s no release date for the Westworld remake.
