Walt Disney World has confirmed that demolition is moving forward immediately in one of the most recognizable sections of Disney’s Hollywood Studios, marking another major step in the park’s ongoing transformation.

While Hollywood Studios has spent the last decade reshaping itself through headline additions like Toy Story Land and Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, this latest move makes it clear that the park’s next chapter is no longer on the horizon—it’s already happening.

This round of changes doesn’t revolve around a single attraction. Instead, it impacts an entire area that has quietly anchored the park for decades. For many guests, this space wasn’t about thrills or spectacle. It was familiar, functional, and deeply tied to the park’s identity. Now, walls are going up, signage is coming down, and Disney is wasting no time clearing the path for what’s coming next.

Immediate changes begin in Animation Courtyard

According to reports as of January 6, the most visible demolition-related activity is centered on Animation Courtyard. Crew members have already removed Lightning Lane and standby wait time signage from the former Disney Jr. show entrance, a clear signal that this location is no longer being preserved for its previous use.

Lettering and decorative elements have also been stripped away, reinforcing that this is not a temporary closure or minor refresh.

Animation Courtyard has been home to family-focused entertainment since the late 1990s, hosting various Disney Jr. and Playhouse Disney stage shows over the years. While the offerings evolved, the footprint of the area remained largely the same—until now.

Disney has confirmed that the courtyard will be fully reimagined into a space inspired by the Walt Disney Studios lot in Burbank, transforming it into a cohesive, studio-themed environment rather than a collection of disconnected venues.

Even the iconic archway topped with Mickey ears is set to change. Concept art for the reimagined area no longer includes those elements, signaling a full visual reset rather than a simple update.

The Magic of Disney Animation is set to open in 2026

At the center of this transformation is the return of The Magic of Disney Animation, a reimagined experience scheduled to open in 2026. The new attraction will place guests inside a playful version of an active animation studio, where Disney characters have come to life and taken over the building while the animators are away.

Rather than functioning as a traditional walkthrough or exhibit, the experience is designed to be interactive. Guests will explore themed studio departments, encounter characters, watch short films, and even learn how to sketch animated figures.

A large indoor play area inspired by the concept art of Alice in Wonderland (1951) will provide younger guests with space to explore, while character meet-and-greets will be integrated throughout the experience.

The surrounding courtyard will also be transformed, extending the studio theme outdoors with shaded areas, playful details, and entertainment spaces meant to evoke the real Walt Disney Studios campus. While construction is underway, Disney has confirmed that The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure will remain accessible, allowing parts of the area to stay operational during the transition.

Monstropolis officially replaces Muppet*Vision 3-D

One of the most emotional changes confirmed for Hollywood Studios is the replacement of Muppet*Vision 3-D with a brand-new Monstropolis-themed land inspired by Monsters, Inc. (2001). After decades as a fan-favorite attraction, the Muppets’ presence in this corner of the park has officially come to an end.

While demolition timelines will likely be phased, Disney has made it clear that the theater and surrounding area will be reworked to support an immersive Monstropolis environment, and we’ve already seen several aspects of that area demolished. The new land is expected to focus heavily on character interaction, humor, and world-building, aligning with Pixar’s enduring popularity with families and younger audiences.

Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster enters a new era

Another major change already confirmed is the upcoming closure of Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith. The attraction will reopen as Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets, replacing the rock concert storyline with a more comedic, character-driven experience.

While the high-speed ride system itself is expected to remain intact, the queue, preshow, music, and overall narrative will be completely reworked.

Hollywood Studios is no longer in transition—it’s transforming

Taken together, these developments make one thing clear: Disney’s Hollywood Studios has moved beyond incremental change. Animation Courtyard’s demolition, the arrival of Monstropolis, and the reimagining of Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster all point to a park that is actively redefining itself once again.

For guests, the short-term reality will include construction walls, altered pathways, and temporary closures. But in the bigger picture, Hollywood Studios is laying the groundwork for a more cohesive, studio-inspired identity—one that blends animation, storytelling, and immersive environments in a way the park hasn’t attempted before.

This isn’t just another refurbishment cycle. It’s a decisive reset.
