The DC Universe is undergoing a major transformation on the big screen, with James Gunn and Peter Safran spearheading a brand-new era.

The new continuity started this summer with Superman (2025), the first theatrical entry in the DCU, with David Corenswet taking over from Henry Cavill as the titular Man of Steel.

But even with Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow set for release in 2026 and Superman: Man of Tomorrow hitting theaters in 2027, the most anticipated upcoming project is The Brave and the Bold, a reboot that will introduce yet another iteration of Bruce Wayne/Batman.

The Next Batman Actor Has Been Unveiled

While casting has not yet been confirmed, several names have been circulated online, sparking speculation about who will next step into the iconic cape and cowl.

The next actor will follow Michael Keaton (Tim Burton’s Batman films), Val Kilmer (Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever), George Clooney (Joel Schumacher’s Batman & Robin), Christian Bale (Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy), Ben Affleck (Zack Snyder’s DC Extended Universe films), and Robert Pattinson (Matt Reeves’ The Batman).

But as the cinematic DCU builds momentum, attention has also turned to Batman’s next appearance in video games.

TT Games (Traveller’s Tales), known for their LEGO adaptations, recently unveiled the upcoming third-person action-adventure “LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight” in a brand-new behind-the-scenes featurette.

The game also comes with a notable casting update: Shai Matheson, who has lent his voice to many major gaming titles such as “Until Dawn” and “Star Wars: Outlaws”, has been revealed as the voice of Bruce Wayne/Batman.

Matheson takes over from Troy Baker and the late Kevin Conroy, both of whom are beloved for their performances in previous LEGO Batman titles. Conroy, a true Batman legend, also voiced the character in animated TV shows and feature-length specials for many years.

Heroes and Villains

Fans of the LEGO series can expect the same combination of humor, action, and creativity that has defined the franchise for years, but with Matheson bringing a new interpretation to Gotham’s Dark Knight.

“Years ago, at TT, we made the first LEGO Batman game,” Development Team Head at TT Games Jonathan Smith says in the video. “That was so special for us. But now, with ‘LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight’, we are able to draw upon the whole history of that wonderful character and distil decades of fantastic storytelling to really immerse players in the experience of becoming the Dark Knight.”

TT Games Design Director Mark Green adds, “We’ve pulled in all of these references from Batman movies and TV shows,” which include Batman (1989), The Batman, The Dark Knight trilogy, the animated series.

“One of the many great things about ‘LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight’ is that it manifests all these different elements of Batman that we’ve loved over the years,” co-CEO of DC Studios James Gunn explains. “People can experience this character maybe as fully as they ever have.”

The game is also bursting at the seams with many other iconic characters. Its massive ensemble includes Commissioner Jim Gordon, Barbara Gordon/Batgirl, Nightwing, Robin, Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Talia al Ghul, The Joker, Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin, Poison Ivy, and Ra’s al Ghul.

Alongside Matheson, comedy actor Matt Berry—known for The IT Crowd—will voice the musclebound Rogues Gallery villain Bane, promising a mix of menace and wit in the game’s storytelling. No other actors have been revealed yet.

While these roles are limited to the video game, the casting offers an intriguing glimpse at how different performers can bring a new energy to the same characters across mediums.

When Can I Play “Legacy of the Dark Knight”?

The new game highlights the expanding footprint of Batman within the DCU and related media. Even as speculation continues over who will portray Bruce Wayne in The Brave and the Bold, fans can experience a new take on the character through Matheson’s performance in the LEGO game.

With the LEGO game set to release in 2026 — presumably ahead of the yet-to-be-formally-announced live-action reboot, players will get an early taste of Gotham through a familiar yet reimagined lens.

Shai Matheson’s voice may also soon become a defining element of the Dark Knight for a whole new generation of fans.

“Legacy of the Dark Knight” will be released on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S in 2026.
