Universal Orlando has officially confirmed what many theme park fans have long expected: the Lost Continent at Islands of Adventure is set for a major transformation.

Once a centerpiece of the park when it opened in 1999, the land has slowly faded into obscurity as attractions shuttered and newer intellectual properties stole the spotlight. Now, demolition permits have been filed for roughly five acres of the area, signaling the end of an era and the beginning of something entirely new.

The Fall of the Lost Continent

The Lost Continent was once a thriving land themed to ancient mythology, offering guests an immersive dive into legends of gods, beasts, and hidden temples. Over time, however, its offerings dwindled.

The Eighth Voyage of Sinbad closed in 2018, and the popular Poseidon’s Fury shut down in May 2023 to make way for “exciting new offerings,” according to Universal. What remains today is a shell of its former self: a restaurant, a couple of quick-service eateries, and a gift shop.

Universal has now confirmed that construction activity will soon begin in the area, though details on what exactly will replace it remain under wraps. Still, speculation is rampant—and three possibilities stand out.

Option 1: The Lord of the Rings

Few franchises carry the same weight as The Lord of the Rings. Long rumored for Epic Universe, the Tolkien-inspired property makes sense in Lost Continent for both thematic and logistical reasons.

The medieval, mythical atmosphere is already well-established, and a sweeping re-theme would require less of a tonal shift than other options. Imagine walking from Hogsmeade into Middle-earth—it feels like a natural progression.

While Universal has never confirmed it has the rights, whispers persist that talks have been ongoing. Bringing Tolkien’s world to life would give Universal a direct answer to Disney’s Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, offering a new crown jewel for fans of fantasy.

Option 2: Zelda

If there’s one rumor that refuses to go away, it’s Zelda. The Legend of Zelda has been heavily linked to Lost Continent for years, especially since Universal and Nintendo have already collaborated on SUPER NINTENDO WORLD.

Fans have pointed out the clear similarities between the Zelda franchise’s temples, dungeons, and mythical creatures and the land’s current architecture.

However, not all reports agree. At least one insider now claims Zelda is not the chosen property. That hasn’t stopped speculation that Zelda could still find a home in Orlando, perhaps even taking over the Lost Continent as part of a larger Nintendo expansion.

Fans also note a long-term rumor that Pokémon may eventually move into the Simpsons area once that license expires. If true, Nintendo’s Orlando presence could grow far beyond Epic Universe.

Option 3: Expansions to Current Lands

Another possibility is less about something brand new and more about extending what Universal already has. The land sits in a prime location, with bridges connecting to Jurassic Park and Seuss Landing, and it’s not far from Hogsmeade. That means Lost Continent could serve as an expansion pad for one or more existing lands.

Two ideas stand out: a Grinch-themed attraction that would tie into Seuss Landing, or an extension of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. The latter feels especially likely given the Wizarding World’s enduring popularity and its proximity to Hogsmeade.

With Universal leaning heavily on intellectual properties to drive attendance, expanding its most successful franchise would hardly be surprising.

What Comes Next

Universal’s strategy is clear: intellectual properties are the key to its future. CEO Mark Woodbury recently emphasized that the company is committed to leveraging both in-house and licensed brands to drive business. With Lost Continent’s days numbered, the only question now is which property gets the nod.

Whether it’s a journey through Middle-earth, an epic Zelda adventure, or the continued expansion of Harry Potter’s world, Universal’s plans for Lost Continent will reshape the landscape of Islands of Adventure. For fans, the mystery is part of the excitement—but one thing is certain: the Lost Continent as we know it is about to disappear forever.
