Walt Disney World has seen its fair share of changes, updates, overhauls, and remodels over the last decade, though the resort’s biggest developments are still on the horizon. Disney announced its big plans for its Florida theme park resort in 2024, revealing that not only would Magic Kingdom be getting some upgrades, but so would EPCOT, Animal Kingdom, and Hollywood Studios.
The company plans to develop several new rides and attractions for its Florida theme parks, including a suspended roller coaster, a first for Disney World. The thrill ride will be themed to Pixar’s Monsters Inc. and will be located in a new section of Disney’s Hollywood Studios set to be called Monstropolis.
While many fans are excited by these changes, Disney’s decision to close multiple parts of Magic Kingdom has proven far more divisive.
July 6, 2025, will be guests’ last day to enjoy Tom Sawyer Island, the Liberty Square Riverboat, and Magic Kingdom’s Rivers of America.
All three of these experiences have been crucial parts of the Magic Kingdom, shaping not only the park’s feel but also its appearance. The artificial Rivers of America have cut through and passed through the park’s various locations, adding to the ambiance of lands like Frontierland and Liberty Square.
Tom Sawyer Island is perhaps one of Disney World’s most unique attractions, offering guests old and young the chance to explore an island ripped straight from the works of Mark Twain himself. The island serves as a playground of sorts, featuring dark caverns, rickety bridges, and well-equipped forts to explore.
The Liberty Square Riverboat ties everything together, allowing guests to sail along the Rivers of America. During their short adventure, riders will pass by icons like Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and the previously mentioned Tom Sawyer Island.

This all closes on July 7, allowing Disney to begin its bold and ambitious new Magic Kingdom project. A new area named Piston Peak will take over these three experiences. Inspired by Pixar’s Cars franchise, Piston Peak will be home to a number of new attractions.
The headlining experience will be an off-roading racing adventure similar to Radiator Springs Racers in Disneyland. Concept art (shown above) reveals an action-packed natural park filled with lush greenery, sandy trails, and even snow-capped mountains.
There is no official opening date for Piston Peak just yet. As such, guests should expect to see Magic Kingdom covered in construction for the foreseeable future.
