As competition across Orlando’s theme parks intensifies following the official debut of Universal’s Epic Universe, Disney is turning its attention back to EPCOT — and its flagship thrill ride is about to return.

Disney has announced that the newly reimagined Test Track, developed in collaboration with General Motors, will officially reopen to guests on July 22, 2025. This high-profile refurbishment arrives at a pivotal time for Walt Disney World, as it continues to respond to the industry-shifting impact of Epic Universe’s highly anticipated grand opening earlier this year.
Test Track, one of EPCOT’s few thrill-based offerings, has been closed since mid-2024. When it reopens, it will do so with an updated storyline, redesigned vehicles, and enhanced guest-facing experiences both on the ride and in the queue — all designed to keep EPCOT competitive in a rapidly evolving market.
A Broader Vision for Test Track
The new version of Test Track shifts away from its previously narrow Chevrolet branding to a more holistic exploration of innovation across all GM brands. The goal is to create a more emotionally resonant, forward-looking attraction that celebrates the history and future of automotive design and performance.
Among the key changes guests can expect:
-
Completely redesigned vehicles, now styled to reflect concept and research prototypes, featuring new lighting and seat configurations.
-
A queue divided into six immersive exhibit zones that highlight key developments in mobility and transportation.
-
Reworked show scenes that emphasize themes like user customization, emerging onboard technologies, and the human connection to the driving experience.
-
A retained high-speed finale, with updated scenic elements tying the outdoor loop to the new storyline and design language.

Competitive Positioning: EPCOT in the Spotlight
The reopening comes at a time when EPCOT’s identity is being strategically repositioned. Long known for its educational tone and cultural showcases, EPCOT has increasingly become a staging ground for big-budget, innovation-driven experiences — a direction exemplified by the 2022 launch of Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind and now cemented by the return of Test Track.
The move also reflects Disney’s broader strategy to respond directly to Universal’s Epic Universe, which is currently dominating attention across the Orlando market with brand-new attractions based on Nintendo, Universal Monsters, and expanded Wizarding World IP.
In terms of ride offerings, Cosmic Rewind and the newly refreshed Test Track give EPCOT two major thrill anchors — a significant shift for a park once absent of headliner coasters.
Operational Updates
Construction on the Test Track site has moved rapidly in recent weeks. The ride’s new marquee is fully installed, exterior walls have come down, and operational testing has been observed. The former gift shop has been rebranded as the Test Track Gear Shop, which reflects the attraction’s updated style and color palette.
While Disney has not yet provided dates for early access events, preview opportunities for Cast Members, Annual Passholders, DVC Members, and Club 33 are likely in the works, as is typical with high-demand ride reopenings.
As July 22 approaches, Disney is positioning Test Track as a cornerstone of its Summer 2025 push — a key asset as the company works to maintain its leadership in Orlando’s increasingly competitive theme park landscape.
