The latest trailer for Disney’s new Snow White remake is receiving immense amounts of backlash and hate online. Released less than a full week ago, the official trailer for Disney’s live-action retelling of its original princess story has surpassed over 600,000 dislikes on YouTube, continuing a worrying trend for the upcoming film.

Starring Rachel Zegler, who made a name for herself in films like Steven Spielberg’s take on West Side Story in 2021 and last year’s continuation of The Hunger Games franchise, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, Disney’s live-action version of Snow White seeks to introduce Disney’s original quality to a new generation of fans.

Zegler stars opposite Gal Gadot’s Evil Queen in a film that looks to be a visual treat for longtime fans, with Disney and the cast teasing several changes that will help differentiate the live-action film from the classic story.

However, Snow White has been embroiled in controversy since the very start, mostly due to comments made by Zegler herself.

The newest trailer gives fans a better look at what to expect with next year’s Snow White remake, which appears to be full of CGI environments and characters. While not inherently bad, this artificial look of the new film certainly contrasts with the simple, hand-drawn approach found in the 1937 original film.

Users made their voices heard on YouTube, with the trailer receiving an overwhelming number of likes on the platform, 610,000 to be exact. In comparison, the trailer has only received 25,000 positive ratings.

Zegler was first announced to star as Snow White back in 2022, with this casting proving to be one of the most controversial decisions The Walt Disney Company has made in recent years. Zegler sparked criticism due to the way she approached the character, claiming she did not want to portray Snow White as another damsel in distress.

“I just mean that it’s no longer 1937,” said Zegler. “We absolutely wrote a Snow White that… she’s not going to be saved by the prince, and she’s not going to be dreaming about true love; she’s dreaming about becoming the leader she knows she can be.”

Zegler has repeatedly stated that there is a need for stories that better represent modern values. The actress reiterated her complaints about the prince in Disney’s original film, calling him “a guy who literally stalks her.” Zegler went on to joke that her version of Snow White may not even include a prince at all, a joke that seemed to generate more outrage than it was worth.

This controversy and bad press were heightened earlier this year when fans got a first look at the film in a teaser trailer. This video would go on to garner more than 300,000 dislikes on YouTube, and while the internet tends to be a negative place, these numbers are certainly concerning for a film Disney reportedly spent over $250 million to produce.

Disney’s Snow White remake originally intended to hit theaters in March 2024, though it was eventually delayed an entire year, undergoing reshoots in the first half of 2024.

Snow White arrives in theaters on March 21, 2025.
