The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992) is a holiday classic that has endured. Directed by Brian Henson, the film adapts Charles Dickens’ timeless 1843 novella with a Muppet twist. It has been a Christmas household staple for over 30 years because of its larger-than-life characters, infectious musical numbers, and, of course, its themes of generosity during the time of giving.

The Muppet Christmas Carol Returns!

Now, a new Walmart ad titled Walmart Presents: A Who Knew Carol has reimagined the iconic song “Scrooge” from The Muppet Christmas Carol, bringing back Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, and Gonzo the Great as narrator Charles Dickens, alongside the rest of the Muppet ensemble.

This time, Ebenezer Scrooge, originally played by Michael Caine in the film, is now portrayed by Walton Goggins, whose credits include Tomb Raider (2018) and Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018).

Created in partnership with Disney and The Muppets Studio, the ad is an extension of Walmart’s ongoing Who Knew marketing campaign and is tied to a new wave of Muppet Christmas Carol merchandise that’s now available at Walmart. Disney Store has also unveiled several new items.

The beloved 1992 classic has continued to receive new merchandise each Christmas. Last year, fans raced to secure products including the limited pin and plushie advent calendars inspired by the film. Around the same time, Chicago pop-punk band Fall Out Boy released a rock-cover version of the film’s song “It Feels Like Christmas” as part of the Spotify Singles Holiday series.

Alongside the new merch from Walmart and Disney, this year also sees the return of The Muppet Christmas Carol in Concert Live to Film, where the movie will be screened while a live orchestra performs its score in venues throughout the UK.

Whether this ad signals a possible return to the film through a larger project such as an official sequel or remake remains to be seen. Either way, the holiday classic remains as popular as ever.

Who knows—maybe Disney World’s Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets will get a seasonal Muppet Christmas Carol overlay at some point in the future!

For now, you can enjoy The Muppet Christmas Carol on Disney+, where you’ll also find the extended cut that features the song “When Love Is Gone.” A storybook adaptation of the film titled The Muppet Christmas Carol: The Illustrated Holiday Classic can be found at Amazon.
