Credit: Universal Orlando Harry Potter fans hoping to enjoy an alcoholic beverage at an iconic wizarding world experience will be left disappointed this fall.Alcohol is part of the Harry Potter universe, but its theme park presence is tightly controlled. Universal’s famous Butterbeer is completely nonalcoholic, despite the books implying the wizarding drink contains a small amount of alcohol (even if Harry and friends are drinking it from the age of 13 onward). Rowling personally approved the park recipe before The Wizarding World of Harry Potter opened in 2010.
There is also a long-running rumor about Rowling and alcoholic Butterbeer. Back in 2023, a former Universal team member claimed that the controversial author “lost her mind” after learning guests were adding shots of Fire Whisky to Butterbeer. The story has never been independently verified, but Universal employees will not mix the two for guests.
But that doesn’t mean the Wizarding World is totally dry. Universal Orlando Resort sells Fire Whisky alongside themed beers – including Wizard’s Brew, Dragon Scale, and Hog’s Head Brew – with wine and other alcoholic options available at select locations such as The Leaky Cauldron and The Hog’s Head. The key distinction is that Butterbeer itself remains alcohol free, regardless of what adult guests order alongside it.
However, this same freedom doesn’t apply to all Harry Potter experiences worldwide.
‘Harry Potter’ Experience Bans Guests From Drinking Alcohol
Forestry England had applied for permission to sell alcohol at an upcoming Harry Potter illuminations trail at Cannock Chase Forest in Staffordshire (via BBC).
Running from October 1 through January 3, the family event will take guests along a designated walking route lined with illuminated features depicting scenes from Harry Potter and the Forbidden Forest. Entry will be staggered through prebooked time slots, with food and drink concessions available around the trail.
Organizers had hoped those offerings would include mulled wine and hot chocolate with Irish cream. However, Cannock Chase District Council rejected the licensing application after receiving more than 75 objections.
Residents raised concerns about traffic, noise, antisocial behavior, and the risks of encouraging guests to drink at an event most will drive to.
Forestry England insisted that alcohol would have played a relatively small role.
“It’s very much a [family-oriented] event,” Jon Payne told the licensing committee. “The amount of alcohol consumption is very small, served from limited outlets in the forest, and not available throughout the site.”
Butterbeer Escapes the Ban
There is at least one piece of good news for thirsty Harry Potter fans.
The event’s nonalcoholic Butterbeer is unaffected by the ruling, meaning guests will still be able to try one of the Wizarding World’s most famous drinks.
Not everybody is thrilled about that prospect. During the hearing, Councilor John Parkes branded Butterbeer “horrendous” while questioning the drinks organizers planned to sell.
For everyone else, Butterbeer will have to provide the closest thing to a trip to the Three Broomsticks. Anything stronger is officially off the menu.
‘Harry Potter’ Plans for Universal United Kingdom
Universal has not yet confirmed Harry Potter for Universal United Kingdom Resort, its new Bedfordshire theme park targeting a 2031 opening. The company has only promised six themed lands, rides, attractions, entertainment, a 500-room hotel, and a separate retail and dining district.
Still, rumors of a Wizarding World have persisted. Reports in August claimed the park could receive a Hogsmeade-style area anchored by Hogwarts Castle and Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, the attraction already found at multiple Universal resorts. None of those plans has been officially announced.
A big clue arrived in September. A project page associated with construction company PCL appeared on HammerTech titled “Project 1307 UUKR WWoHP,” initials that seemingly correspond to Universal United Kingdom Resort and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. The wording was subsequently removed and the page locked.
As noted on its website, PCL has previously worked on Universal’s Wizarding World projects, including in Orlando, adding more weight to the discovery. However, Universal has not publicly named PCL as a Bedford contractor or confirmed Harry Potter for the park, meaning Hogwarts remains a very strong possibility rather than a done deal.
