Across Walt Disney World, attractions that once seemed untouchable are getting new technology, new scenes, and, in some cases, significantly different stories. Disney has repeatedly framed these projects as ways to keep longtime attractions relevant for another generation.
Now, one of EPCOT’s most recognizable classics is officially next.
During the massive Horizons presentation at D23 on Saturday night, Disney confirmed that Spaceship Earth will face a major concept replacement that changes what the attraction is actually about.
For an attraction that has stood at the entrance of EPCOT since the park opened 43 years ago, this isn’t a minor refurbishment.
Disney Makes Major Theme Park Announcements at D23
D23 returned to Anaheim, California, from August 14 through August 16, 2026, bringing Disney’s biggest fan event back with presentations covering movies, television, theme parks, and other projects from across the company.
For theme park fans, the biggest presentation came on Saturday, August 15.
Horizons: Disney Experiences Showcase served as Disney’s major presentation for its theme parks, cruise ships, resorts, and other experiences worldwide. The presentation gave Disney a chance to reveal what Imagineers have planned for the years ahead.
And while plenty of attention naturally went toward entirely new projects, Disney also used the presentation to reveal a major change coming to an attraction that has been part of EPCOT since opening day.
Spaceship Earth is officially getting reimagined.
Spaceship Earth’s Original Concept Is Being Replaced
Disney confirmed that Imagineers will overhaul Spaceship Earth, replacing its longtime central concept with a broader story.
Disney Parks Blog explained the change this way:
“It’s time to invent the future! At the showcase, Ali revealed that a re-imagineered Spaceship Earth will be coming to EPCOT, bringing the attraction into the internet age and beyond.
What can you expect in the world of tomorrow? The ride currently tells the story of human communication, but the team is reimagining that focus on a broader theme that is still classically EPCOT – human connection.
So, here’s to the next 30,000 years on Spaceship Earth. The present is just the beginning!”
That distinction between “human communication” and “human connection” matters.
Spaceship Earth isn’t simply getting fresh paint, repaired Audio-Animatronics, or updated effects. Disney is replacing the central concept that has defined the attraction and using that new idea to reshape its story.
The attraction currently traces thousands of years of human communication, moving through scenes depicting early civilizations, written language, printing, telecommunications, computers, and other developments.
Under Disney’s newly announced direction, that framework will broaden into the story of human connection.
Disney also says the attraction will move into the “internet age and beyond,” bringing its later scenes closer to the modern day. That means guests should expect outdated portions of the attraction to give way to a newer vision of technology and connection, complete with some new Disney magic.
Calling this a Spaceship Earth replacement doesn’t mean Disney is tearing down EPCOT’s famous geodesic sphere or building a completely unrelated ride inside it. Instead, Disney is replacing the attraction’s existing concept and reworking its scenes around a different central theme.
The ride system and iconic structure may remain, but the experience inside is heading toward a new era. After 43 years of Spaceship Earth serving as EPCOT’s opening-day journey through human communication, Disney has officially decided its next chapter needs to tell a broader story.
Another Disney World Classic Is Already Getting an Overhaul
Spaceship Earth isn’t the only longtime Walt Disney World attraction facing major changes.
Disney previously announced a substantial update for Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress at Magic Kingdom.
That attraction temporarily closed on July 6, 2026, as Imagineers began preparing its next version. Disney has confirmed the project will include an Audio-Animatronics figure of Walt Disney in a new introductory scene inspired by the 1964 television special in which Walt discussed the attraction before its World’s Fair debut.
Imagineers are also updating the attraction’s later scenes, including a new finale inspired partly by original concept work from Disney Legend John Hench. Disney has confirmed the updated Carousel of Progress will debut in late spring 2027.
The two projects point toward a similar strategy. Disney isn’t necessarily removing every classic attraction, but it is becoming increasingly willing to make substantial changes to them.
Spaceship Earth now joins that list.
When Will Spaceship Earth Close at EPCOT?
For now, Disney hasn’t announced when Spaceship Earth will close for its transformation or when the reimagined attraction will debut.
Those dates will become particularly important because of the scale of what Disney announced. Changing the attraction’s central story while updating scenes to cover the internet age and beyond will require considerably more than routine maintenance.
We should learn more about the closure and reopening timeline in the coming months as Disney moves the project closer to construction.
Until then, guests visiting EPCOT can still experience the current version.
But following Saturday night’s D23 announcement, its future is no longer a question.
After 43 years, Disney is preparing to replace the classic Spaceship Earth concept with a reimagined attraction focused on human connection rather than mere communication.
The giant sphere will remain an EPCOT icon. What happens once guests climb aboard, however, is that they are officially entering a new era.
