Disney has officially confirmed that a new Figment interpretation is joining Disney Lorcana in 2027, giving EPCOT’s purple dragon a new glimmer form more than four decades after his Walt Disney World debut. The reveal came during the Disney Lorcana Trading Card Game panel at D23 2026, where Disney and Ravensburger announced that Lorcana will return to the EPCOT International Festival of the Arts next year.

For Figment fans, the important distinction is just as notable as the announcement itself: Disney has not announced that the Figment character at EPCOT is being replaced, redesigned, or removed. The newly revealed version is a Disney Lorcana glimmer created for an exclusive EPCOT card, while Journey Into Imagination With Figment remains listed as an operating attraction.
Disney Confirms a New Figment Lorcana Glimmer for 2027
Disney Parks Blog confirmed the Figment announcement, stating that Figment will be highlighted on a Disney Lorcana card “for the first time ever” when the trading-card game returns to the EPCOT International Festival of the Arts in 2027. The card shown during D23 identifies the character as Figment – Creative Inspiration, creating a new Lorcana interpretation of one of EPCOT’s most recognizable original characters.
That distinction matters because Lorcana’s characters are known as “glimmers”—versions of Disney characters created within the game’s magical setting. The D23 announcement therefore expands Figment into Lorcana rather than confirming a wholesale redesign of the character throughout Walt Disney World.
It is nevertheless a notable expansion for a character whose identity has remained closely tied to EPCOT. Figment’s EPCOT History Goes Back to 1983
Figment made his attraction debut on March 5, 1983, when the original Journey Into Imagination opened at EPCOT Center. According to D23’s official history of Journey Into Imagination, the attraction introduced Dreamfinder and his small purple dragon companion, with Figment voiced by Billy Barty.
That makes Figment 43 years old at the time of the 2026 D23 announcement—not 42. His attraction history has not been static, either. The original Journey Into Imagination was replaced in 1999 by Journey Into Your Imagination, which dramatically reduced Figment’s role, before Disney introduced Journey Into Imagination With Figment in 2002.
That complicated history helps explain why any suggestion of a Figment “replacement” carries extra weight with longtime EPCOT followers. What Is Actually Changing—and What Isn’t
For now, the confirmed change is specific: Figment is becoming a Disney Lorcana glimmer and appearing on an exclusive EPCOT card in 2027. Disney has not announced a replacement for the Figment seen in Journey Into Imagination With Figment, nor has it announced that the ride will close for a character overhaul.
Walt Disney World’s official attraction page continues to describe Figment as the playful dragon guiding guests through the Imagination Institute’s sensory labs. The attraction is still publicly listed among EPCOT’s current rides.
That makes the Lorcana artwork a new interpretation rather than evidence that Disney is erasing the familiar park character. Disney Lorcana routinely reimagines recognizable characters through different roles, settings, and visual concepts, and D23’s 2026 panel showcased multiple examples, including new interpretations of Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, and Disney Princess characters.

Disney has not yet published the 2027 festival dates or full instructions for obtaining the Figment – Creative Inspiration card. Disney Parks Blog says additional Festival of the Arts information—including dates, merchandise, food, artists, and performers—will be released later.
What Figment Fans Should Watch Next
The D23 reveal gives Figment a new identity inside Disney Lorcana, but it should not be confused with an announced overhaul of Journey Into Imagination With Figment. That distinction is especially important amid recurring fan interest in the attraction’s future and Disney’s broader redevelopment of its parks.
Earlier in 2026, Inside the Magic reported on comments from Disney leadership addressing Figment’s future without announcing a new attraction project. Nothing in the Lorcana announcement changes that status.
The next concrete milestone will be Disney’s release of additional 2027 EPCOT International Festival of the Arts details and instructions for the exclusive Figment card.
