Ever since Disney announced a villains-themed expansion for Magic Kingdom at D23 in 2024, there have been plenty of questions about what guests will actually find inside it. Disney confirmed two major attractions from the beginning, but the company kept most of the important details secret.
That changed at D23 2026.
Disney has now officially confirmed the name Villains Land, revealed the original story behind the area, and shared major new details about both attractions that will anchor the expansion. One will send guests racing into Maleficent’s territory on a massive coaster. The other will take guests through the Magic Mirror and into a strange realm filled with Disney Villains.
And Disney isn’t treating this like a small addition tucked into a corner of Magic Kingdom.
Imagineers compared the scale of Villains Land to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, suggesting this could become one of the most ambitious expansions Magic Kingdom has ever received.
Disney Finally Confirms the Villains Land Name
First, Disney settled something that had surprisingly remained unofficial.
The new Magic Kingdom area will simply be called Villains Land.
Disney Experiences President and Chief Creative Officer Bruce Vaughn and Executive Creative Director Caroline May of Walt Disney Imagineering confirmed the name during the Disney Experiences presentation at D23.
It isn’t an especially complicated name, but that’s intentional.
Magic Kingdom already has Fantasyland, Tomorrowland, Adventureland and Frontierland. Imagineers wanted the villains-themed expansion to feel like another true “land” within Magic Kingdom rather than a completely separate concept.
Of course, the atmosphere will be dramatically different.
Disney describes Villains Land as bringing a darker form of magic into the park while still fitting within Magic Kingdom’s larger fairytale identity.
That fairytale connection turns out to be especially important because Disney has also revealed something much bigger than the area’s name.
We finally know why all these villains are in the same place.
Villains Land Has an Original Story
Instead of simply building individual areas themed to famous villains, Walt Disney Imagineering has created an original story connecting everything inside Villains Land.
Guests will essentially leave the safe portion of the fairytale behind and venture into a dark forest.
Somewhere within that forest stands a damaged Wishing Well. This isn’t the kind of place where someone made an innocent wish and lived happily ever after.
According to Disney’s new backstory, someone once made an evil wish at the Well.
The wish was so powerful that it corrupted the stone itself, broke the Wishing Well apart and allowed its poisoned magic to spread through the surrounding forest.
That corrupted magic attracted some very familiar faces.
Disney’s villains began arriving one by one, each hoping to claim what remained of the Wishing Well’s power. Those who managed to harness that magic used it to create their own homes throughout the land.
That gives Imagineers a reason to build dramatically different environments within the same area. Guests will encounter fortresses, palaces and other structures shaped by the personalities of the villains who created them.
Those locations won’t just provide scenery, either. Disney says they will contain the area’s attractions, food, merchandise and other experiences.
It’s an interesting approach because Villains Land won’t simply retell one Disney movie. Instead, Imagineers can pull characters and ideas from across Walt Disney Animation Studios while placing them within a completely new story created specifically for Magic Kingdom.
And one villain will apparently have an especially intimidating home.
A Maleficent Coaster Is Coming to Villains Land
The first major attraction is centered around Maleficent.
Disney had already said Villains Land would contain two major attractions, but the company has now revealed what guests will actually experience on one of them.
It’s a coaster.
Disney says guests will come face-to-face with Maleficent before racing through enchanted briars surrounding her mountaintop fortress. The attraction’s story centers around guests accepting an invitation from the Mistress of All Evil and venturing into her domain.
The new concept art gives a better idea of what Disney has in mind.
Maleficent towers over the scene while ride vehicles move through a twisted environment filled with enormous thorns and dark vegetation. Her fortress rises in the distance, creating what appears to be a much more threatening environment than guests normally encounter at Magic Kingdom.
But Disney’s biggest tease involves what the coaster itself might do.
Imagineers say the attraction will use elements they have never attempted on similar attractions before, describing the project as something intended to break new ground.
Disney hasn’t explained exactly what those elements are yet.
That leaves plenty still to be revealed, including the ride system, track layout, height requirement and exactly how Maleficent will appear during the attraction.
Still, this is far more information than Disney had previously provided.
And Maleficent isn’t getting Villains Land to herself.
The Magic Mirror Will Lead the Second Major Attraction
The second headlining attraction takes a completely different approach.
Rather than another coaster, Disney is building a dark ride featuring multiple Disney Villains.
The Magic Mirror will serve as the host.
Disney says guests will discover the Magic Mirror in the catacombs beneath the Evil Queen’s palace. From there, the Mirror transports riders into what Disney calls the “Mirror Realm.”
Once inside, guests will encounter numerous Disney Villains conjured by the Magic Mirror. Imagineers plan to combine physical sets with special effects to create the strange world on the other side of the glass.
That concept gives Disney considerable freedom when choosing characters.
Unlike the Maleficent coaster, which focuses heavily on one villain and her fortress, the Mirror Realm attraction can bring together a much larger collection of characters.
Disney hasn’t revealed the complete villain lineup yet, meaning there are still some major surprises being held back.
But having one attraction built around Maleficent and another capable of featuring a wide range of Disney’s most recognizable villains gives the land two very different centerpiece experiences.
Villains Land Could Be Massive
The size of this project may be just as important as the rides.
Disney specifically compared Villains Land’s scale to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. That’s a major comparison for a Magic Kingdom expansion and suggests guests won’t simply walk through a handful of villain-themed buildings on their way from one attraction to another.
Disney is building an environment meant to be explored.
That includes the fortresses and palaces created through the corrupted Wishing Well’s magic, along with shopping, dining and other experiences spread throughout the land.
Imagineers have also developed a distinctive architectural style for the project.
During previous development work, Disney’s creative team traveled to Paris and Barcelona, studying Art Nouveau and Modernisme architecture. Imagineers focused on rich colors, natural patterns and unusual proportions that could make structures appear as though they had been created through magic rather than traditional construction.
The team eventually began calling the style “Conjured Architecture,” and Disney says that concept is guiding the overall appearance of Villains Land.
That means Disney isn’t simply recreating locations from animated movies.
Imagineers are borrowing from those characters and films while developing a new physical world around them.
Villains Land Just Became Much More Real
When Disney first announced Villains Land in 2024, the promise alone was enough to make the project one of the most closely watched additions coming to Walt Disney World.
Two years later, the picture is much clearer.
Villains Land is officially the name. A corrupted Wishing Well explains how Disney’s villains came together and built their elaborate homes. Maleficent will anchor a major coaster built around her mountaintop fortress and enchanted briars. The Magic Mirror will host a second attraction that transports guests into the Mirror Realm, where numerous villains can appear through physical environments and special effects.
Most importantly, Disney is beginning to explain how all of those pieces connect.
Villains Land isn’t shaping up as a collection of unrelated villain attractions. Disney is building an original fairytale around the entire expansion, giving Imagineers a way to bring characters from different stories together without simply recreating one existing movie.
There are still some big questions.
Disney hasn’t revealed every villain coming to the Mirror Realm attraction. We still don’t know exactly what makes the Maleficent coaster unlike anything Imagineers have attempted on comparable rides. More details about the restaurants, shops and other experiences remain under wraps as well.
But after years of artwork, teases and broad promises, Disney has finally told us what the two major Villains Land rides will actually be.
And for Magic Kingdom, that makes this once-mysterious expansion feel much closer to becoming a real place guests will eventually be able to enter.
