Rey Skywalker, played by Daisy Ridley, was introduced in Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens (2015), before returning in Star Wars: Episode VIII — The Last Jedi (2017) and concluding her arc in the final film, Star Wars: Episode IX — The Rise of Skywalker (2019).
But the character has not appeared in any major on-screen continuation since the sequel trilogy.

Rey’s Story Has Not Been Fully Revisited in Seven Years
While the character remains one of the most recognizable faces of the Disney era of Star Wars, her presence in the franchise has since largely been limited to supplementary media appearances.
These include video games such as Fortnite and the new Monopoly: Star Wars Heroes vs. Villains, LEGO Star Wars miniseries, merchandising, comic and novel tie-ins that have expanded the sequel trilogy era, and immersive experiences and character interactions across Disney Parks. Rey has not been central to any major live-action or animated storyline since 2019.

Star Wars Is Shifting Away From Rey Skywalker
Although Lucasfilm previously confirmed development of a standalone Rey-focused film set 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker, the project has yet to move into active production or establish a clear release timeline. It remains one of several announced Star Wars films currently in various stages of uncertainty as the studio reshapes its cinematic slate around new characters and eras.
Instead, Lucasfilm has increasingly prioritized projects like Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi, the first major expansion of the critically acclaimed Visions anthology into a full series. The project continues the story of Kara, first introduced in the original Visions short, and expands the franchise’s focus on new Jedi mythology outside of the Skywalker-era legacy characters. And now, the first official trailer for the upcoming spinoff series has been revealed:
The new series builds on the momentum of Visions Volume 3, which already revisited fan-favorite anthology stories such as “The Ninth Jedi” and “The Village Bride,” reinforcing Lucasfilm’s commitment to developing alternative corners of the galaxy far, far away.
Rather than focusing on established saga characters like Rey, the studio appears to be investing in standalone storylines that can operate independently of existing continuity constraints.

What Is The Ninth Jedi?
The Ninth Jedi story itself follows Kara and her journey across a fractured galaxy where Jedi Order remnants attempt to rebuild after the fall of the Sith. The expansion into a full series marks a significant step in Lucasfilm’s animation strategy, with Production I.G. and Lucasfilm collaborating closely on the project.
This direction stands in contrast to Rey’s current position within the Star Wars franchise. Despite being the central hero of the sequel trilogy and one of the most recognized characters of the Disney era, alongside the likes of Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu, her storyline has not been revisited since The Rise of Skywalker.
But her journey is not over, as her long-gestating solo film is still understood to be in development. There are also rumors that Daisy Ridley will reprise her role as Rey in the upcoming film Star Wars: Starfighter, which is directed by Shawn Levy (Deadpool & Wolverine) and stars Ryan Gosling in the lead role. It releases in theaters on May 28, 2027.
For now, though, the direction of the Star Wars franchise suggests a clear pivot away from legacy sequel characters and toward expanding anthology-driven storytelling.
Visions Presents‘ The Ninth Jedi streams on Disney+ on August 5.
